I've seen comments about light rain, but what about heavy rain? I've been using a Kavu Chillba (http://www.kavu.com/Product/176/Fishermans_Chillba.aspx) for many years and they are amazing, even in heavy rain. Would this OR be as good?

No warranty information has been provided in Massdrop's description for this item. Is it protected by Outdoor Research's "Infinite Guarantee" or just by Massdrop's 30 day return policy or by some other warranty?

That is a fair question and thank you for calling us out on it. I'll talk with our sourcing and copyright trans to make sure this issues is addressed systematically when it can be. We work directly with all the Outdoor brands and therefore the products come with the full manufactures warranty, but it is probably rarely stated anymore. I cannot speak for other communities but I will raise this issue that we can be more diligent about this. The Massdrop quilt is covered under warranty as well, but that probably isn't helpful to you now as you asked months ago and I didn't respond. My apologies.

DannyMilksThe Massdrop quilt has the additional issue that it is Massdrop-labeled and the drop description does not state anywhere the name of the actual manufacturer. From a legal perspective, consumers don't even know for sure if it will be sourced from the same manufacturer from one drop to the next. As such, your statements in the discussion that it is made by "X" and covered by their regular warranty may not even carry any enforceable weight.

I just bought the sun hat at the REI anniversary sale or else I would have jumped on this drop. I live in Texas and had a chance to wear it on a couple of hikes, two outdoor events and a surprise downpour (kept my head dry). Worked fantastically at each. The back is long enough to give good coverage on the neck, but it isn't so huge as to look completely goofy like some other full-coverage sun hats. The cinch works well for both stand-alone and with a wet cloth/bandana underneath. The interior band soaks up a pretty generous amount of sweat without soaking the rest of the hat. Finally, the brim has a flexible foam core that doesn't flop too much, but can be folded for transport.

What kind of suckers would buy this? I wear a similar looking hat that I got for $2 from a clearance rack.

zoomorphIn 55 years I have worn a lot of hats. While a $2 hat will keep the sun off your head, this does a lot more. This is to first I have had that does that, plus stays comfortable in the high mountains, in the jungle, on the beach at the equator, and does OK in light rain. And has a lifetime guarantee, so I don't have to buy another one every year.

allentAgreed, plus the stitching on these are far superior to the cheap rat-nested approach on the $2.00 hats, which always seem to fail within a year.
Glad that this hat will last at least 20 years before needing another one to purchase.

I just saw the...
"Sorry, this drop cannot be shipped to AU."
..and wondered, since I just bought the OR Ghost hat from Massdrop- shipped to Australia- is there a difference for this hat?

Mark M.Thanks Mark, I think I will wait this one out- I ordered the Massdrop OR Ghost Rain hat... https://www.massdrop.com/buy/outdoor-research-waterproof-hats ...and it has been delayed a little so I will not get it before this drop closes. I think I will see that one first to get some idea if I need an actual sun hat, since the Ghost can double as both.

I've had one of the sun hats for 4 years now. I got it originally for a trip to the equator - both for the beach and walking around. It worked perfectly. Only downside is that in a stiff breeze, the brim did tend to flop a bit.
This works like the old pith helmets. The hat has a mesh liner that rests against your head. Then there is a layer of air between that and the outer shell of the hat with a lot of mesh ventilation to keep the breeze flowing. Even just walking around generates enough airflow to keep it cool.
I have been wearing it each summer since then while doing yard work and walking the dogs. I'd order a new one but mine still looks almost like new.

allentIt's Outdoor Research - you should never have to "order a new one" unless you lose the old one, as OR has the same bulletproof lifetime guarantee that DarnTough has :)
