I literally just bought the Transcendent Down Sweater and Beanie a week ago on Amazon. They're both fantastic pieces of gear that I love wearing, but there are two things I would caution - the sleeves are slightly baggy in the shoulder, and longer than I'd expect, and although the OR website indicates the fabric is water resistant, Amazon indicates it's not. As a result I really don't know (like maybe I got an old model from Amazon??) Neither of these is a deal breaker for me, but are worth noting.
On a related note - does anyone have any experience with Nikwax Down Proof? I was debating washing the sweater in this to add a bit of protection, but I don't want to ruin a good piece of gear trying to make it slightly better.

alfredo99Not sure what you mean by ruin. I use it on my down products. No adverse effects.

alfredo99I will never ever ever come close to buying or using that Nikwax product again. Not a big fan of most Nikwax products to begin with but the soaps and even the Polar Proof are ok. Would not recommend trying the Down Proof on good down, and 650 is still fairly decent. On a lower quality fill power down it might not be so bad because those have more resilience and most often have more feather/quill content to help. Keep in mind that stitching is always going to be your achilles' heel, but if you want to use something for a little more moisture resistance, pick a good fabric waterproofer like the ones from Atsko or Grangers. They both have one that works pretty well and doesn't inhibit breathability. Still going to need to use a shell if there is anything more than snow or heavy mist.

ChurchillWI've heard it can create spots on the jacket, or the down will clump even with tennis balls in the dryer. I did a small test by putting water on the sweater, and it beaded off pretty well, so I think the fabric at least has a small amount of protection anyway. I'll probably just leave it be, or possibly go with the fabric spray if it comes to it. At some point the jacket will have to be washed and I'll hope for the best then.
