It bothers me that they label this a special edition, and then market it multiple times. That makes it less "special" and lowers the value.

FfoghornIt was a Special Edition and Pelikan only marketed it once. These are illegal (in the US) gray market pens with no warranty.

tbaleyWow! Does Massdrop disclose this to customers? I thought Massdrop negotiates with the manufacturers.

FfoghornThey do not negotiate with manufacturers. When they were pushed recently on this issue they said "if not explicitly listed in What You Get then it is not included"

FfoghornWe go through this every time Massdrop is selling a Pelikan pen... So you know, tbaley is a dealer who sells Pelikan pens at exorbitant prices here in the USA and wants to protect his profits. And no, buying Pelikan pens from overseas dealers is NOT illegal neither in USA, nor in Europe. Yes, Chartpak (aka Pelikan USA) can at their discretion refuse warranty service on a gray market pen, but Pelikan Germany will gladly repair it for the cost of shipping it to them. Massdrop uses different vendors to procure the pens and provides the warranty for them, too.

semkaWell, this is confusing. I don't think Pelikan is doing themselves any favors if they cooperate with this. Massdrop should make clear that these pens "were" part of a special edition when originally released. Otherwise, it appears like there is an endless supply of this "special edition".
I find it purposefully misleading. It's not all that different from all of Massdrop's versions of headphones - are they the same, better or worse than the versions marketed by the manufacturer? Who knows. I like a good deal, buy I still want the identical quality and design. Otherwise, it becomes a different product rather than a good deal.

semkaI don't know anything about tbaley, but if Massdrop is undercutting him fairly, that is one thing. If Massdrop is undercutting a legitimate dealer via deception and games, I can't blame him for being frustrated. I am not qualified to comment.
What I do know is that "special edition" implies a controlled quantity. Somehow, Massdrop offers this pen over and over again.
Maybe the edition was a failure and dealers around the world are trying to get rid of them. But, maybe they are fakes. It's just unsettling. At the end of the day, I love it and smile every time I look at my cheery orange pen.

FfoghornChartpak and its dealers are marking up Pelikans more than 100% over what you'd pay overseas, so there is no deception here, but rather an unjustifiable price gouging by Chartpak and its dealers in the USA. We live in a global economy and it's consumers choice where they want to buy their goods. Chartpak is just the US distributor, and Pelikan Gmbh can't restrict their dealers in Europe from selling to whoever they want because THAT would be illegal in Europe.
As for special editions - these are not the same as limited editions you're confusing them with.

semkaThanks for the education! You know your Pelikans.
I see the distinction between special and limited editions, although I submit that if a special edition keeps being manufactured, at some point it becomes part of the regular product line and not special.
Regarding Chartpak, are you saying that they are not an official Pelikan distributor, but rather get all their pens from dealers? Because if they are an official distributor for Pelikan then, of course, Pelikan certainly can control price gouging. Anyway, it sounds cheaper to fly to Frankfurt to buy my next Pelikan.
Thanks again!

FfoghornChartpak is Pelikan USA, i.e. the official distributor here, so they are the ones who enforce the price. There are conflicting reports on whether this price gouging is done with the official endorsement on the part of Pelikan Gmbh or it's Chartpak's own initiative.
