A well respected brand makes limited edition pieces from quality material, what's the problem? If this were a high end watch or pair of cans the price would raise few eyebrows. A biro might do just as well, but the same could be said for the plastic watch at the bottom of a box of cereal or a $10 pair of earbuds.

jlambThe $400 Pelikan Sourveran 800 it's based off of would do just as well, literally. The extra $800+ gets you the silver band, basically (oh, and an UGLY TACKY shade of yellow). I don't begrudge people the right to lust after this or buy it, but I don't begrudge others the right to poke fun at the first group, either.

jlambI agree, I hate to see the "dissing" of the high end pens. "A biro might do just as well, but the same could be said for" when purchasing certain models of cars, types of roofing material, and bicycles.
I have been a happy user of Pelikan for 20 plus years. I write with my pens for a minimum of 3 hours about 5 days a week. I have never had a Pelikan need a repair, no problems with any kind of ink, and their nibs are interchangeable. I carry about a dozen pens around the house in a case like a box of crayons, that means that I may go for days or weeks without using an inked pen. The Pelikans have never skipped or dried up or needed soaking.
For this pen, I agree with dropbrian, a hefty portion of the price is for the ascetics and it isn't to my taste. But if it was, I could see my self in the group of people willing to buy I at this price. I guess poking fun at either group is okay--if it is poking fun and the ones doing so are willing to take it as well as give it, and as long as it just poking fun and not resorting to being mean.
