The tips are only weighted in relation to the body because the tip is metal and body is plastic. There are better balanced and weighted pencils, but they tend to be pricey. ($30 + per pencil).
I have had two of these for a little over a year. They are decent "studio" pencils. They don't travel with me, and only get used for small details (with a light touch). One has cracked at the joint between metal and plastic. The other fell off the table, and the tip bent. I have 'fixed' them (pliers, hobby files, and superglue), but their days are numbered. My friend, who has had her graphgear 1000s for years, and carries them around loose in her purse, said "I told you so," since she gave me the advice I'm about to give you.
I wish I'd bought 1000's in the first place.
IMO, it is worth spending $35 to upgrade to the set of four graphgear 1000 pencils, or buy just the one or two you need for $10 each. They will last longer, which saves you money.

I own both, and agree that the 1000s seem quite a bit nicer for the roughly 30% higher price
I haven't experienced any of those issues with my 500s yet, but I can believe they wouldn't hold up well to too many drops

KavikPersonally, I rely more on the 2.0 mm Caran d'Ache Fixpencil. Metal, one-piece barrel is durable, and the lead sharpens to a fine point with little effort or waste. There's no fragile point left exposed. Same with 5.6 mm clutch pencils that I use for shading. The Graphgears are convenient for certain tasks, though.

I've always enjoyed hard lead in fine mechanical pencils for light sketch layouts, especially as I've been trying to get more into inking lately, but I have been meaning to try some of those thick lead holders too 👍
