Sooooooooooo, about 1.5 days left and still no follow up from Massdrop? That is disappointing.
Sorry for the delay in response. I have been away at the NAMM show in Anaheim and our new sample of the X2's didn't arrive as early as I was hoping. I'm back in the office today and have spent some time with a new pair and an older pair driven by the same setup (Grace M920->Violectric HPAv181->Fidelio X2).
1. The earpads are glued to the posts, however the pad pulled right off and the glue residue is easily removed with my fingernail. It doesn't seem to have much of a function, and the earpad works fine without it, presumably why they discontinued using it.
2. The sound quality has an extremely slight difference between the two pairs, however we only have about 30 minutes of listening time on the new pair, so we're hooking them up to a portable DAP and leaving them to play all day in the closet. We'll follow up with an update around 9pm once we've got some hours on it but my ears tell me after burn in they'll be dead on.
2.5 days left, actually... 2 days, plus the final day, which counts-down in hours.
lol, of course you would respond right after I said we were waiting for a response! :p
Thanks for keeping us in mind, I know for some people, like myself, we are still looking to find our first good, relatively inexpensive, way to get into the audio enthusiast world. I don't even know of a place where I am (Charleston, SC) to even try to listen to headphones at this level.
Thanks for the update. Thank you for being honest stating there is a difference. From the testing I have done with 3 seperate pairs, the difference is much more likely to be found in the pads than the drivers. You can test this by swapping the pads around from pair to pair. Much more likely this will result in the same sound rather than waiting for magic pixies to burn them in.
Good call. We'll leave them to burn in and check them out, then swap the pads and do the same. Yay, science.
Hehe. You're very polite considering I come across as a troll sometimes. Good man :)
Hi :D Thank you for all your effort towards this.
I've joined the drop and would like to know if it is deemed to be lacking it's SQ, would it be covered under warranty and how about the delivery fees for receiving and returning is handled?
I do know for the fact that you are trying your best here but I am somewhat lost in these thread's Q&A
If you have never heard an X2, how can you tell if it's 'lacking in SQ'? I seriously doubt you can send it in because you deem it's 'lacking in SQ' especially if you've never heard an X2 with proper SQ yourself.
Just listened to our brand new pair (now burned in for 7+ hours) versus the older pair and in a blind a/b am unable to reliably pick which is which. Also swapped the earpads with the same result. They sound identical to me.
At this point I feel we can conclude these units are a-ok in the sound quality department and warranty service will be limited to defective units. Thanks for your patience on this everyone.
@nicpope - Thanks for the followup. It makes me feel a bit more warm & fuzzy inside. I genuinely hope I get a solid pair and enjoy them for years to come. :)
meh, you are right on that one. I was referring to rather poor quality as in unequalised output etc.
thx nicpope, i do believe in massdrop so i'll keep my drop intact :D
What counts as "defective"? If they're glued? If they're unbalanced?
1. I've already indicated in previous comments you will be receiving glued units. This is not a defect.
2. If one of the drivers doesn't work, if there is a rattle or buzz, if there are significant cosmetic issues or a damaged cable: these would count as defects.
Thanks for doing due diligence on this, Nic! You have allayed my fears enough that I think I'll be VERY happy with my $200 investment here (barring major defects, as stated). The X2's were already considered a great SQ value at $300, AFAIK....I relish the thought of A/B-ing them against the K7XX at the same price point, when I receive each.
Thanks for doing the legwork, this us great news.
As you've stated many times throughout the pages, the glue is just glue, you can pick it off, unless it's excessive.
Thumbs up nicpope
Now just ship em already :P
Thanks for the update, at least now we have some hope the pairs in this drop may be free of QC issues being discussed earlier.
