As a first fountain pen these are more than adequate. The nibs are smooth though you may get ONE thats a little scratchy in a pack of twelve. They write with a wet line and as with all fountain pens work better on some papers than others. They can be refilled by pulling out the nib and feed, and using an ink syringe filled from a bottle more than once....so all in all not bad value.
