Why would you want GPS in the head-unit when it does Android Auto?
I just did Seattle - Vancouver in a rental with AA and my Moto Z doing all the directions with Maps - great voice and touch integration ... for a head unit which should cost $300 bucks not $800 (that's a next spend for me to get AA in my old Tahoe now I am home).
Because Android Auto will use the external antenna if available, though you are correct the GPS software itself isn't worth it for the extra cost the AVH-W4400NEX is a better/cheaper option on that front. XD
At time there is no reception and hence the phone GPS / Maps will not work.
