Problem with both Dobly Atoms and Auro 3D for me is they need to have specific speakers placements. Gonna wait and see DTS X since they mention you don't need specific speakers placements for them.

If you want sound coming from that direction, the only way to get it from there is by placing a speaker.

My Onkyo 636 has 4k/60, HDCP 2.2 and Dolby Atmos for $500. Why spend all that money when you will want/need to upgrade again very soon. Save your money for the new hotness later.

I don't think my room is big enough for a 9.2 speaker set up lol

To be aware if going for atmos, the dts equivalent is still being finalized. However my sclx87 which is 2013-2014 model now supports atmos via a firmware update so I'm sure the "dts atmos" (i forget the name dts-ex or something) will probably be added via a firmware update too.

I would steer clear of East Coast TV's. They are known for their bait and switch and selling refurbished goods as new, etc. Check out consumerreviews.com etc and you will see they have hundreds of negative reviews on there. Pretty much every review mentions that they would not ship the item and called to up-sell them and would not ship the original product. I am assuming that is what they are doing on here. I would be careful when posting price comparisons from these kinds of companies.

I wonder how superior this unit is to the Yamaha RX-A2040. It also does 9 channels at 140 watts each and supports Dolby Atmos. I found mine refurbished on Amazon for $1099 (normally $1599). That's a significant step up for the Pioneer.

I do not believe this particular model supports HDCP 2.2, which is expected to be a requirement for future video content devices (particularly 4k). What this means is upcoming 4k devices (e.g. UHD BD Players, Apple TV 4(k), Roku 4(k), Chromecast 2, etc...) will presumably be limited to 1080p/720p when routed through this AVR. I want to say UHD BD players are confirmed to require HDCP 2.2 for 4k, and it's widely assumed streaming set tops will follow suit.

The real answer is pretty much no one really knows at this point. Plus with the effort to make every link in the chain (TV, hdmi cable and AVR) compliant in some way, 4K HDCP-compliant gear today might not work with next years models. That's the main reason I removed 4k from the decision tree when getting an AVR earlier this year. Other than that, this is still pretty awesome, with lots of great features, just don't make 4k a deal breaker

No, everything I've seen on the issue says 2.2 is hardware based and can not be solved with software (firmware).

I have the pioneer elie sclx87. Great avr. Only dislike is that you have a fixed xover setting for all speakers ie no individual xover freq for each channel. Xover can be 50, 80 or 100.

No support for Dolby Atmos?

I agree there isn't much content for Atmos yet. My setup is decent enough (Polk RTi A9 L/R, CSi A6 Center, A3 rear). All I would need to do is install 4 ceiling speakers and Atmos would be complete. Then I just need to wait for more content because I refuse to spend money on the latest Transformers Bluray...

That's if they even start pushing Atmos. I more interested in AURO-3D. They have a bigger selection already.
