I was about to buy, then I realise I'd have to wait until Feb 2020 for it to even ship... These wait times are ridiculous, and I refuse to wait so long

tomtomtomGood thing I checked the comments to find this out. The last round I ordered, to find out that the waiting time was super long. Shame to see the same thing again. Not willing to give you my money now, to receive something in half a year. Absurd.

tomtomtomThat's just how group buys work. They aren't manufactured yet.

mickbenjaminsWhy would you check the comments to find out when it ships? It's in big, bold letters on every drop's page:

And @tomtomtom, there are times when it makes sense to complain about waits on products here, primarily when they already have a set of items from a particular vendor. Like @zzzaacchh observed, though, this is a group buy: they are taking preorders for products that will be produced only after the entire order closes. This is also typically the only place such an item is available, meaning that if you want it, you'll have to just suck it up and wait for it to be made. Especially for more niche interests, products in the mechanical keyboards community often operate on this model, so unless you want to only ever grab keyboards that are frequently mass-produced, you'll have to get used to the idea of waiting.

eponymousI understand. I did not know this was a group but, or even exactly how group buys work. That being said, I don't see any benefit to the consumer (expect from getting something *slightly* unique) for this style of commerce. Imo, the seller should be accepting some risk and producing prior to preorders, or at least sell at a close to breakeven point during the preorder phase.

tomtomtomHow generous of you, to offer that other people take on all the risk so you can benefit. Traditionally, the point of a group buy is that it's organized, not by a manufacturer, but by a group of people interested in a particular product. It's common in the MK community because it allows for short runs of specialty products: Someone can design a PCB, or a case, or a keycap set, find a manufacturer who can make it for a certain price at a given number of orders, and offer to other people who are interested in it to sign on as preorders. If the GB hits minimum order quantity (MOQ), the GB proceeds. Especially for smaller GBs, there may be increasing price breaks at points past MOQ. Once the preorder period is through, the GB closes, the product goes into production, and a few months later people get what they ordered. There are plenty of options if you aren't interested in GBs. Some of them are affordable entrypoints; some are flashy shit aimed at gamers; some are high quality and customizable. GBs, however, are going to be where you find the truly unique, niche, and interesting (and, of course, some really horrible shit, too; and what's which to whom is going to depend a lot on personal preferences and tastes). Nobody is forcing you to join GBs, and a product you would be interested in having on your doorstep next week might not be worth waiting half a year for. If GBs as a whole, even, are just not your cup of tea, de gustibus non est disputandum. But whining about the very existence of a purchase model that's a cornerstone of the community does nothing but parade your ignorance.

tomtomtomYeah, we can tell. As long as you keep not reading things you find intimidating, you're gonna keep looking like a fool.

tomtomtomIf you're looking for an off the shelf, non custom, RGB loaded Planck that you can get sooner than 6 months, there's the Planck EZ.

eponymousJack indeed just has an unusual and super long wait list. I ordered from him in Jun and later cancelled. Order was 7463. You can see now if I didn't cancel, I was going to be around #140 in the queue.... In the last month only 30 or so orders were fulfilled by him. So my observation here is that things are going to be slow with OLKB anyway, group buy or not. You don't really need 3 month to order PCBs and cases. PCBs (300) can be delivered in a week. Cases going to take time but shouldn't be much longer either. I think his bottleneck is how he arrange assembling.
