Solid, Powerful Compact Keyboard
I've had my Planck v6 for two months now and overall, it is a joy to type on. Pros: +The QMK firmware offers a level of customization beyond what any sane person could want. c-coded macros with states and timers can be triggered by assigning custom internal keycodes to keys or by entering a sequence of keys with leader-key functionality. Up to 32 stackable (and conditional) layers can be programmed, so that multiple layers triggered at once causes expected behavior, and switching base layers allows for a variety of "modes". +The keyboard is lightweight, compact, and portable, but it is also solidly built. It can easily fit on top a laptop without hitting keys or triggering the touch pad. (You will want to use an L-shaped cable if you use the keyboard with a laptop.) +The keyboard is easily powered by and functions with all of the android devices I have tested, (both those with USB-micro and USB-C ports), which I cannot say of other, more power-hungry keyboards I have owned. (Both C-to-C and A-to-C with a micro (or C) adapter on the A work, as long as the adapter-side isn't the one plugging into the keyboard.) +The hot-swappable switches on the keyboard really are hot-swappable. (I did not like having some of the keys clicky that I thought I would like clicky, and was able to remove and replace the switches without any problem.) Cons (most are minor firmware related gripes): +There is a steep learning curve, both for learning how to customize it properly (by cross-compiling c-code), and for learning how to type on it in a way that is effective and does not cause strain to your hands. Prepare to modify your keymap several times before you find what works best for you. You may have to change compiler flags just to get the firmware to compile. ('make CFLAGS+="-Wno-error -Os" planck/rev6:keymap-name:dfu-util' works for me.) + There is no easy way to switch between mouse settings on the keyboard (because they are hard-coded), and the speed of the mouse can vary from operating system to operating system. You may have to select values that are a compromise. There is a mouse mode that allows selectable speeds, but enabling this disables the more intuitive acceleration mode. (Update: a new mouse mode in QMK fixes this!) + The keyboard does not seem able to trigger a wake from sleep (with at least one of my laptops), and can sometimes take a while to respond after a wake from sleep. (This may not be the fault of the keyboard (it might have something to do with USB-C and windows), but my other keyboards do not have this problem.) (Update: It was a problem with the USB port on that computer, not the keyboard.) + The Alt+Tab macro (w/timers) feels a little bit like a compromise compared to other less-customizable keyboards with a better behaving app-switching keys. (Update: If you get creative with the coding and make the alt-hold dependent on which layers are active, it works much more smoothly.) + There seems to be no way to end a leader-key sequence without having to wait for it to time out. I would like to be able to choose whether hitting the leader-key again pre-timeout confirms/ends, cancels, or restarts a sequence. (Currently it does nothing.) Recommendations: +Use the 48 key layout. The extra keys at the thumbs are useful for extra layer switching. (Flipping the keycaps so that they angle downward will reduce thumb fatigue and help you feel the center.) +The default keymap isn't spectacular, but it does include a lot of functions w/intelligent comments and can be used as a reference for making your own. +Buy a couple of L-shaped USB-C cables. Because USB-C is flippable, you can insert them so that the cable runs either left or right along the keyboard. This puts less stress on the USB-C port (which has been identified as a structural weak point) and lowers the space footprint of the keyboard considerably. +Using taller SA-profile (or similar) keys for the top left and right corners may help your fingers navigate.

are stabilizers included?
Yep! The kit comes with two 2-u stabilizers.
Can I put rotary encoder on this?
Yes! The left side of the board has positions for a Rotary Encoder. You can solder one in in either of the four positions. (Or all, but you can only have one programmed function active at a time, not make each RE do something different.)

Update 9/22 5:10pm PT:
Hey all - orders have been getting packed up and shipped throughout the day, and the team was in the process of shipping the remaining orders when I talked to them a few hours ago and on track to get 100% of orders done today. This means everyone should get their tracking number within 12-24 hours from now, and an expedited package heading their way.
Update 9/21 5:58pm PT:
As of today the kitting was fully completed for all of the remaining orders, and the shipments were getting staged. The team expects to have 100% of orders out tomorrow.
Update 9/20 10:45pm PT:
I did not get an update today before I had to leave the office - I'll be following up on this tomorrow morning to get the latest info. (Next Update 9/21 before 5pm PT)
Update 9/19 8:30pm PT:
Hey all - We are on track to have everything shipped (and sent via expedited shipping) by end of the week (9/22) per the email, though individual orders will continue to go out as soon as they are each able to be sent (sorted + kitted) this week.
To be clear, the sorting and kitting of the thousands of various orders combinations is the part that is manual and takes a lot of time, and that should have been done well in advance of now. There are also a number of better ways for this to be done, and to make sure this process does not lead to a delay, but obviously improvements to the process now (which are being made) won't help with this drop.
(Next update 9/20)
Updated 9/18 11am PT:
Emails meant to be sent on Friday 9/15 were actually sent this morning (9/18):
https://www.massdrop.com/buy/planck-mechanical-keyboard/talk/1817244
(Next update 9/19)

Update 9/15:
Today's update: We are continuing to ship today and through next week and we currently expect all of the remaining 33% of orders to ship next week. Our whole team at the warehouse is on this, and we will be expediting shipping of these orders (domestic and international) to ensure that you get the order as quickly as possible at this point. I'm personally expecting remaining orders to go out first thing next week, but will be updating this thread daily until they're all sent out.
For more context, this delay was caused by an incorrect estimate of the amount of time it would take to sort and kit all of the orders, along with a prioritization communication issue (meaning specifically other drops being worked on in conjunction with this, when this should have been all hands on deck). To be clear, these aren't excuses nor are they acceptable - that's just the facts of what happened. Regarding point (2) below, the teams are meeting next week to discuss what went wrong here and how we're fixing it down the road, so I can share more on that, hopefully next week.
For point (4), [regarding] what we can do to get these all out on 9/15, what I was able to do was get priority shipping for the remaining items and get the team to prioritize these entirely today and into next week. We were not able to get these all out today, nor were we able to get overtime scheduled last minute that could help get some out this weekend. I'll be bringing the priority issue up along with the ability to get ahead of these drops and schedule overtime as needed as ways we can get ahead of this in the future.
And lastly, as I've mentioned before, I've kicked off a new internal process for us to improve communication on drops. This will not be perfect, but it will help create a more regular conversation between Massdrop and the community when problems happen, and will also better serve us to get ahead of these issues and not leave us in the state we're in here.
Again, I'm truly sorry for the issues and horrible experience Massdrop has provided here. Thanks again to all of you who participated in this drop, and we hope to have the chance with many of you to show ourselves doing better in future drops. (Next update 9/18)
Update 9/14:
Hi all - sorry for the delay in following up today. At this point, about 2/3rds of the orders have been sent out, but the remaining third has not been shipped yet and are expected to continue to go out over the next couple business days.
To save a few of you here a small amount of time, let me simply state for everyone that the continued delay is unacceptable. And, let me say I'm sorry. I don't have a clear reason into why the remainder haven't been sent out beyond it taking more time than expected, and I don't really think there could be an acceptable reason at this point anyway.
All I can offer at the moment is: (1) a commitment to give daily updates until the order have all been sent out with as much information as I can gather, (2) a follow-up and explanation from the teams involved into what actually happened and how we're going to fix it in the future as soon as I can produce that information , (3) and a commitment to improve the messaging from Massdrop in the future (a new process has been started and is being driven by me, and will begin next week).
edit: (4) I also want to let you know that I'll be following up to see what can be done to get these all out tomorrow (9/15), and provide an explanation if for some reason that's not possible.
I've read most of the comments below, and understand the frustration from most people in this drop. For those of you who have decided to not buy from Massdrop anymore and those of you who are sticking with us, thank you for giving Massdrop your time and being a part of the community. I'm sorry again for the delays and poor messaging, and am working to try and improve and communicate improvements being made on both fronts.

Update 9/8: The remaining orders are on track for being shipped early next week. As of now, 43% of orders were shipped. The remaining 57% of orders are all on track to ship by Weds (9/13), but some orders will start being shipped on Mon (9/11). As a reminder, you will receive an email once these are shipped and tracking numbers are in the system (this can sometimes be 12-24 hours after they are actually “shipped”). Thanks for the continued patience (and feedback on this thread), and sorry again for the delays and poor messaging on this drop. --------
Hey all - I have a quick update for you:
As of now, about half of the Plancks have shipped out. The other half, unfortunately, have been delayed another few days due to a mistake on our end with our inventory management process. This resulted in us not having the needed amount of switches ready to ship by last week, and means that our team is putting together the switch packs right now. The remaining orders are expected to ship early next week at the latest, but we are pushing for a Friday ship date.
The next update will be from me, or someone on my team, on Friday 9/8.
I want to recognize that this is yet another delay for those in the second bucket, and apologize for messing this up. It's a pretty disappointing, and avoidable, oversight that happened due to human error related to the previous delays with this drop.
Beyond that, I want to personally apologize for poor communication on our side throughout this drop. I think most people here recognize that mistakes happen, but it's unacceptable to see bad (or a lack of) communication when mistakes come up. I'll be working on fixing the communication process and sincerely appreciate @atari.zero.tv and others who are sharing feedback on the thread below:

Thanks!

I received the 3 Planks I ordered this week but the Zealios were missing and I’ve not received any emails about them. If I didn’t read this discussion I’d assume they had just been forgotten. I’ll wait until next week (3 weeks from 26 Sep) before contacting support again.

(Old update thread here.) Sept 17th Update: Unfortunately shipments of the latest Planck run will be delayed. Final PCB sign-off took longer than anticipated, and some of the component lead times slipped after we ordered them. We've been told all of the PCBs will be complete by October 9th, and then compiling and packaging all of the kits will take approximately 10 days, with the shipment being ready on October 19th. Air freight from China should have the pallets of ~2000 kits at our warehouse around 10/26, and we should be shipping around 10/31. We'll be posting in the discussions with weekly updates to let you know if/when these timelines shift. Thanks for your patience! Oct 1st Update: Working on getting you guys an updated ETA from the vendor. Haven't heard from them but should have some info in the coming days. Oct 6th Update: Nothing new to share, I'm thinking we'll get a progress report from the CM in the next day or two. We should know whether the PCBs are done or not really soon... Oct 7th Update: Contract manufacturer said everything is on track to be done by 10/19 as per previous expectations. Stay tuned. Oct 12th Update: Will get another update for everyone shortly. Oct 14th Update: Still on track based on our latest communications from the contract manufacturer. Oct 19th Update: Shipping out of China has slipped a few days, nothing major but the manufacturer said they needed a couple of days to get everything finalized and in perfect shape. Expecting to get our inbound freight tracking around Oct 21/22. Oct 23rd Update: Cargo has been picked up from the factory and is going to make its way to us. Shipping queues are quite lengthy (and volatile) and we've been told we should expect the cargo in the first week of November. This changes daily depending on the flights going back and forth from Asia and the availability. I'll update again middle/end of next week. Oct 28th Update: Cargo arrived at JFK tonight a bit ahead of schedule. It still needs to clear customs (fingers crossed it happens on Thurs/Friday), then it needs to get booked onto a truck and taken to our warehouse, and then unpacked + counted, repacked + shipped. I'd still use Nov 6th as the estimated shipping date, it could move forwards, or backwards by a few days. Oct 29th Update: Heads up to people on the fence about purchasing a Planck, the price of it is going to increase once it goes into stock "shipping immediately". You have a few more days to take advantage of the $100 price tag while it's on pre-order. Oct 30th Update: Hasn't cleared customs yet :( Backlogged since there's lots of commercial shipments coming in for the holiday selling season. We're being told it should be cleared on Monday. Nov 1st Update: It's the weekend, why are you obsessively checking for updates? Nov 2nd Update: Cleared customs this morning, they're picking it up tomorrow, and delivering it to our warehouse on Wed Nov 4th. 50% chance it'll start shipping to you on Friday, 50% chance it'll ship Monday/Tuesday. I'm pushing them to get it out Friday! (10% chance it starts to ship on Thursday Nov 5th, because we always put in a 110% effort). Nov 4th Update: Truck pulled up at 2:37PM EST today and unloaded many many many pallets of keyboards. So many keyboards. Plancks and Plancks of keyboards. The workers started unpacking and receiving and were told if they found an extra unit, they'd be in so much trouble they'd be forced to walk the Planck. Assuming counting is done tomorrow morning (we're faster than Pennsylvania over here), we'll be shipping Friday. Nov 5th Update: We're starting to ship orders! Nov 5th Update 2: Warehouse is closed for the day. They got 311 units shipped out today, I expect most of the remaining orders will ship tomorrow and over the weekend. Nov 9th Update: So the weekend shift at the warehouse seemed to have made some mistakes that are being sorted out and coordinated with Fedex right now. It looks like duplicated tracking numbers were issued due to some sort of API error between Fedex, the warehouse, and our systems. They halted shipments over the weekend and the weekday team was at the warehouse today troubleshooting it the issue with Fedex. We don't have a definitive answer on what the final resolution is (the temporary one from the Fedex account rep is that all packages shipped with duplicate tracking numbers will deliver properly, but not have accurate tracking.) But that's a temporary answer and we're waiting for more definitive information. This affects ~700 shipments of all kinds of products (not just Planck). We're on top of the issue and I'll keep posting updates as I hear them. Nov 12th Update: Just to clarify shipping vs order dates. There is a group of you (1704 to be precise) that ordered between June 25, 2020 and September 18, 2020. Those orders had an original "estimated ship date" of Sept 21st, which was obviously delayed to early November and all 1704 orders have now shipped. There is a second group of 246 people, that ordered after October 5th (and up to, as recently as today, and/or are joining the active pre-order right now). Those people's orders have an estimated ship date of Dec 28th. Realistically we're probably going to be shipping these in early December assuming no delays.

KevinAfter two years of enjoying this keyboard I am sad to rapport that the usb connector on my board is no more. I am 100% at fault wrt. it breaking (the keyboard fell down from a coffee table with the cable attached). However this error prone design, and what I expect is cost cutting, have now given me an expensive paper weight. I didn't expect this keyboard to live for ever, but this is the first time it have been dropped and I didn't expect it to break of this easily. It broke clean off.
search
thb im not even mad about it breaking off. Whats really annoying is the fact that there are no replacement PCB's. This really sucks because I really enjoyed this keyboard too bad the USB port design was so bad. I welcome advice or recommendations for either:
  • fixing current PCB
  • getting a replacement PCB
  • getting a different keyboard
Hi everyone, Apologies for keeping everyone waiting on an update for this drop. We wanted to make sure we had collected all information before we made a post in the discussion. The Massdrop x OLKB Planck Mechanical Keyboard Kit was supposed to ship out last week and we have also been getting the keyboard tested to meet FCC standards. Without proper testing documentation the keyboards will not be able to enter the country. However, today we learned that more comprehensive testing is required since the keyboard is also being shipped out to international countries. This part of the compliance testing was something that we had not anticipated while creating the shipping estimates for the drop, and hence there is a delay. All keyboard orders have been produced and are ready to ship. As soon as we have confirmation from the FCC, we’ll ship the keyboards out to our warehouse in New Jersey for fulfillment. Regarding timelines, we’ll have concrete dates within the next two weeks from our testing lab. We will then send an opt-in email to all community members who participated in the drop. We apologize for this delay. If you would prefer to cancel your order, please contact Community Support using the “Contact Support” button on your transactions page and our Community Support Team will be able to help cancel your order up until the drop is being prepared for shipment.

EDIT: More details which I posted here -> https://www.massdrop.com/buy/planck-mechanical-keyboard/talk/1748097
I'd like to address everyone's concerns and additional questions that came up along with correcting some misinformation out there so everyone knows how we got here. 1) FCC and compliance testing as a whole have been on our radar before the Planck drop even happened in March. 2) As orders grows larger - meeting regulations and compliance becomes more important. While a few keyboards might get through customs without proper documentation, if we were to try and import a few pallets of Planck keyboards in full packaging without all the documents in place - there is a very real possibility US Customs will seize everything and that will be the last of those keyboards. 3) With compliance testing like these - the testing lab requires a final version of the product. That means samples and prototypes will not work. Due to the initial delays we communicated about the plate issue and the small delay on PCBs due to component problems - we weren't able to get a finalized Planck until the second week of June. 4) At that time - we would have still met our estimated ship date (perhaps with a 1-2 week delay at most). 5) However, when we learned that additional testing would have to be done along with what we've already scheduled because the keyboard will also be shipped internationally - which means there are international standards to meet as well. 6) Since the testing will be completed at the same time, we will not be able to send the US shipment first. Additional testing also requires additional scheduling with the testing labs - which leads us to today. I will continue to follow up with this process - as soon as we hear back from the lab with the full schedule, we'll update everyone on the status via discussion + email. Thank you for your patience in the meantime.

YanboWuDo you send my missing parts?
6/6 UPDATE: PCBs are moving and should be completed this week. We will have a more detailed update next week.
ORIGINAL UPDATE We have an update on the status of the Massdrop x OLKB Planck Mechanical Keyboard Kit. Unfortunately there were some issues with the PCB portion during production, and we now estimate that the kits will ship in late June.
With the latest Planck PCB order, we found some of the components were end of life or had very long lead time with their respective suppliers. We’ve found replacements and we’re working with the manufacturer to get these replacements validated. Other components like the CNC case, plate, accessories, and keycaps are completed and we’re waiting for the PCB so we can pack everything together.
We currently expect the PCB to be complete in early June, and we’ll update everyone at this time with a more precise estimated ship date.
We apologize for this delay and we are working the team to get these kits produced and shipped in a timely manner. If you don’t want to wait the additional time, you can cancel your order via the transactions page: https://www.massdrop.com/transactions
I do have some pictures of some of the finished parts. Only waiting on the PCB now.

Hey everyone, sorry for the delay getting an update to you. As I’m sure you would have guessed- things are crazy around here. The latest updated schedule is that the kits will be complete on April 21. Getting things out of China is harder than it used to be, so I’d err on the side of caution and estimate 2 weeks to get it onto a plane and shipped to our warehouse in NEw Jersey. Assuming that the warehouse is still operating at that time, probably another week to get everything unpacked, checked, and shipped out. I’m quoting somewhat generous timelines here because things are changing every day. When we get closer to April 21st we will have more clarity on things. April 14th Update: Latest info is that the keyboard kits will be done in a week, on April 21st. They'll then be shipped to our warehouse in NJ, where we'll receive them and ship them back out. Our warehouse is extremely backlogged right now (HD6XX's are taking 5-10 days to ship after being ordered). We're doing our best but there's still quite a bit of trickiness to navigate before we get these in your hands.

April 21st Update: The Planck Kits are finished! They're being packed up and scheduled to be put on a plane on April 23rd, shipping to our warehouse in NJ. Once we have tracking and an estimated landing date in NJ, I'll get you an estimated ship (to you) date. Almost there!

Also, for those of you waiting on the sidelines, Extra Planck Kits will go on sale sometime around Mid-May. So hit the "Request" button if you want to be notified as soon as they're available.

April 27th Update: Everything's done but getting the cargo on a plane has proven to be troublesome. Supposedly it'll be loaded up and shipped out tomorrow, fingers crossed.

April 29th Update: No movement since the 27th.

May 4th Update: The keyboards have arrived at JFK airport. Next steps are to clear customs, get loaded onto a truck, and driven to our warehouse in New Jersey. That process could be anywhere from 2 to 5 days depending on the backlogs at customs and with the freight carriers. Should have tracking once it gets loaded onto the truck- and will provide another update at that time.

May 6th Update: Shipment hasn't arrived yet, hoping tomorrow...

May 7th Update: Delivery to our warehouse has been scheduled for May 8th.

May 8th Update: The shipment has been received at our warehouse. We'll be "receiving" (i.e. unpacking, sorting, etc.) everything today/tomorrow, and shipments/tracking numbers should be going out on Monday (maybe some on Saturday but no promises). On our commercial invoice it looks like we've been short-shipped some units of some of the keyboard configurations. We're working on reconciling that now as we unpack everything and we're checking with the factory in China to find out what happened. If it's a problem it affects less than 5% of the total orders and we'll get something sorted out asap. Stay tuned I'll update again once I have more info.

May 11th Update: These orders are now shipping! After reconciling the manifest with what we received, we can confirm we're short around 30 orders. They've been shipped in a separate shipment that should arrive in about a week. People affected by this will be contacted by customer support shortly and be offered to wait for their order, or switch to a different configuration that we do have in stock. Despite being short certain configurations, we ordered lots of extras and these will be available for purchase (with a ~1 week ship date) soon. If you've been waiting for these to be available for sale, make sure you hit the "request" button to be notified once it goes live.

May 13th Update: More than half shipped, I think everything (except the 30 orders) will get done today. Keep an eye on your email for tracking!

May 22nd: Unstickying this because everything is fulfilled and the store (inventory sales; next day shipping) is now open!

Hey everyone,
Wanted to give a quick update on the status of the Planck - but before I do - I want to stress that primary communication about your order status including things like opt-in will ALWAYS be sent via email. These discussion updates are for me to communicate with the community on a more informal basis - answer questions that come up after updates, giving more context on why there are issues etc. We expect the opt-in email to go out around the week of 8/1/17 - not necessarily that date exactly but I do want to share some expectations with everyone.
Now onto the update - the great news is that we've passed both FCC and CE requirements for the keyboard. The next step will require some slight rework on the keyboard themselves as regulations state compliant devices must be labeled as such. We do not expect this relabel to take a lot of time - once we have all the dates in hand - we will communicate the expected ship date with an opt-in email.
Thank you everyone for your patience, we should have these out to everyone sooner rather than later.

YanboWuIs it possible to request different switches?
@YanboWu I think there are a lot of community members who are VERY interesting in some kind of information. There are some folks who've gotten shipping notifications, many who haven't, and some people have even already received them in the mail (picture was of the green Massdrop-only case). I'm continuing to be patient, but it's very frustrating for a lot of folks in the community to see this handled so haphazardly from the beginning. Even taking into account a long weekend, we shouldn't be 5 days past the due date with no tracking data.

This is a superb set of suggestions and insights. First, I hope Massdrop takes advantage of your recommendations. Second, I'm going take those recommendations to heart myself! I work in online bespoke suiting, and clear communication of garment status to clients is, predictably, paramount. You've helped more than one company with that email.
Thanks from all of us for your cool and well-spoken representation. Thanks from me for the wisdom! Best, Ben
Hey everyone, another quick check-in from me. We are expecting the last Planck kits to arrive at our warehouse at the end of the week.
Judging by the number of individual orders that will need to be shipped out - we are expecting tracking numbers to start appearing towards the end of next week (around 8/30).
Once we have more concrete details - we'll also send out an email update to the drop.

fuck it; I emailed support and canceled this and all orders other than Mito. Not in the right headspace after this death and all the shit that goes with it to worry.

IctinikeSorry for your loss. I'm going through that stuff right now and it's hard without having to deal with this kind of stuff.
