I think we can all agree that MSRPs are mostly fictional. It's funny to see someone using a drop's MSRP to justify something when Massdrop usually gets flak for doing the very same thing. What people care about are street prices.
But please don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to defend the drop (or Massdrop). I appreciate the guys who post alternatives and always thank them for it. Heck, I even do it myself if I see a better deal somewhere else. But just like we call out Massdrop for non-deals, I see nothing wrong in admitting non-alternatives. As much as we acknowledge your good intentions in posting that, let's be honest here: it was not an alternative; it's something completely different with twice the price.
We all bother to post here to help out the community. Let's not let our pride get in our way. There's nothing wrong in calling things what they really are.
ViraelLet's be honest, it is an alternative. It's silly to not say it is. Yes it is more expensive but at the same time it's worth the extra cost, especially since we are talking about relatively low priced items. I can tell you right now that paying $17
(plus more for shipping which you didn't acknowledge at all) for this is a waste of money and if you're looking for something akin to this you're better off paying more upfront and being satisfied with your purchase opposed to buying this waiting a month to get it, realize that it's a POS and then pay for the Espro.
This is a mediocre French Press, the plunger seals poorly and relies on an extra screen in the mouth of the lid, there's all sorts of cracks and spots for gunk to build up that makes it impossible to clean without a brush and sink, the lid closure leaks and it also fails to actually press the coffee grounds since at full extension it sits more then a quarter inch off the bottom. You can find a better French press travel mug in just about any camping store.
I've had an REI brand version of this cup for four or five years now. I use it hard camping and traveling. Its built like a tank, but has some weight to it as a result and may not be the best for backpacking if you count ounces. The little screw in cup that holds your coffee in the bottom is also a great place to hide yo stufffff while on the move, and oh yeah you can keep coffee in there too. Overall great cup, 9/10.
