Shoot, Now I'm confronted with a dilemma, what would be best to take for thru hiking the Appalachian trail? The Sawyer Squeeze or the Platypus Gravity works 2L ?? I realize the Platypus would have an extra 5oz in weight but I sure wouldn't mind spending more time basking in nature rather than squeezing a filter. Any recommendations?

HuntyKeep in consideration the weight of the water containers, you would need smartwater bottles or something along those lines, that adds weight that makes it compatible to this, I thru hiked the AT and used the regular Sawyer, don't bother with the mini, and if I would do it again I would definitely enjoy making a gravity system, filtering is a pain in the rear to the point I would simply drink without purifying.

HuntyI loved the gravity filter on my PCT thru-hike, but I did spend more time at water sources than others with the saywer. I think it depends on your priorities.

HuntyI'm just planning to use 3 x 1L Sawyer pouches with the squeeze. Fill up the pouches and then drink directly from them. Heaps easier then this gravity fed nonsense.

HuntyI used one of these when I thru hiked a few years ago. I only used it at camp really because it takes a little bit of time. For mid-day water stops I used aquamira. You can actually strip a lot of weight by cutting the tubing shorter and leaving a bunch of the parts at home. Remove the foam parts off of the filter ends, the clean bag, and any adapters. You just need the dirty bag, a few feet of tubing, the filter, and the tube clamp. I carried this, a 1L smart water bottle, and a 2L hydration bladder.

HuntyIf you have a camelback or other hydration pouch you can actually just cut the tubing and insert the filter cartridge from the platypus inline with the drink hose. The upside is that it saves a lot of weight (you only need the filter cartridge) on the down side your hydration bladder is always a dirty reservoir which is annoying. If you have doubts about the flow rate while drinking through the filter it actually flows very easily.

HuntySawyer Squeeze bags have a nasty tendency to burst at inopportune times. It’s a shame because their filter technology is awesome. This Platypus would work well on the AT.
