So I got the V3 version, it seems to be compatible with the V1 plugies, or if I'm getting the versions wrong, the old one was purchased in April 2016.
Some notes from my experience: V3 Phone Plug is looser than V1 Phone Plug. V1 Phone Plug was really stuck in there when you put it and you'd have to use a fingernail or something hard to remove it. I liked that personally, but if I remember right, many people complained about it. The new V3 version has a little wiggle room and is easier to remove by hand, but it doesn't fall off by itself so I have no fear of losing it. However, it can get pulled out from the magnetic force of the cable. This is rare, and only if you pull perfectly aligned with the port, any slight tilt will take it out without removing the plug.
I don't remember the cable getting this hot in V1, but it gets really hot to the touch(can be painful). I'm using the same charger, so I believe the cable has changed a bit in internals. To be fair, my charger is using QuickCharge 2(Moto's version) and so I believe this is why it gets really hot. If the battery is low, it gets really hot, if it's anywhere above 60 or 70% it's not getting noticeably hot.
A few gripes. We still don't have a way on Massdrop to add an additional separate phone plug :( The deal I purchased last time came with a cable, a plugie and an adapter for another cable and this deal did not have an adapter.
But the price is cheaper, and also the shipping. (June 2017 Price was 17.99$ shipping 3.25$ for me and April 2016 was 24.99$ and 10$ respectively) so gotta praise Massdrop at that!

My use cases are in the car, and it's super comfortable not needing to fiddle with the connection, you can almost blindly connect it. And the other is with a cable and charger I take between home and office.
