Will this destroy my credit cards/phone if I keep them in the same pocket? Does it have the structural integrity to stay together and prevent the ink cartridge from breaking if it gets crushed?
FireCGunI'd like to hear confirmation if anyone has experience with this pen. Really cool design, but it's hard to think that there are no consequences from carrying a block of powerful magnets in your pocket. (Credit cards, smartphone, HD, airport security, pacemaker?).
darkfelineI have this from Kickstarter.
The cap of the pen is somewhat tricky to remove, requiring you to pinch it at the ink retainer so that it doesn't come off with the cap at the same time. Recapping it is fun as you can "use the force", but you should probably be careful if you're using a refill with a thin nib in case you accidentally bend it. (I'm using a trimmed Uniball Signo UMR-10 rollerball refill - terrifically smooth.) You can "post" the pen cap by sticking it to the back of the pen.
It went through airport security in the pen pocket of my jacket without issue. I don't put it near my phone in case it damages the magnetometer. Also, pen parts might get attracted to magnetic materials in the phone and thus fly towards it rather quickly.
It's kept at my desk drawer as it can be a bit troublesome to carry; it sticks to coins, pocket knives and other pocket accoutrements so if I do carry it it'll usually be in a pen slot in my bag.
That said, it's still a fun and unique pen that's interesting to play with.
devinmcavoyPOLAR is made of the same magnets already in your devices (neodymium in the speakers and mic). The "force fields" aren't strong enough to wipe device memory. It's a common myth as mentioned here: http://www.techhive.com/article/116572/article.html
In regards to credit cards and hotel keys, if it has a magnetic stripe, it's best to keep all magnets away (POLAR, fridge and otherwise). My credit card has a microchip and I've never had any issues. And I carry around a lot of magnets! :)
