So it didn’t sell last time, and drop said Hey, let’s bring it back again, but at a HIGHER price. Good job, schmucks.

WatchyoutalkingaboutNo reason to get all plural about it; there's only one person in charge up there, and despite claims that she's "Now even better tasting" you wouldn't know it from her watch buys!

RayFYea but somewhere in drop’s HQ, between the guys with 16 knives in a bandolier, the keyboard warriors with their custom jello molded thor’s Hammer keycaps, and the deaf audio freaks with their DAC addiction is someone in charge of you know, actually turning a profit. I imagine at this point that person is placing more orders for knives, keyboards, and audio amplifiers. How do you run the same drop 3 times in 3 months and RAISE the price each time?

RayFWhat’s sad is that EVERY place still open and selling watches online is having a sale. Right now, Tourneau is having a sale ON STAINLESS STEEL ROLEXES, which is unheard of the past few years. Jomashop, purchase direct, shopworn, gnomon, etc are all trying to unload stock. You’d think Drop would be contacting them and trying to get some varied inventory. Instead we get retreads with higher prices, blink-n-u-miss-it drops of 2 watches, and of course a glycine and ingersoll.

WatchyoutalkingaboutInteresting...do you see that as a direct result of the Corona Virus and economic down turn/melt down? Certainly would be a shame if all the artificially high, limited availably watch brands/models suddenly had to face the reality that when the shit hit's the fan, owning a drawer full of $30k watches won't seem as popular as it once did. I can just see the ads on Craig's List now... "Lightly used/seldom worn and guaranteed Virus free--make offer:

RayFI’d say it’s due to the economic downturn of china/Hong Kong/Singapore. That was rolex’s Main market the past few years. For kicks I called up Tourneau to ask about getting a hulk submariner. They put me on the ‘list’ and said it would be a while due to the factory shutdown. Previously, they’d tell me they can’t accept any preorders online and to go to my local AD. Ive also been looking out for 2012 era two tone blue submariners (gloss dial instead of sunray) and 2010+ era stainless steel gmt. Both are now about $2k below where they were at the beginning of the year. Even the mighty Batman gmt, previously going for $15k+, are now in the 12-13 range. Still priced over retail, but it’s falling hard and fast. Unlike Drop, however, I expect Rolex to recover.

WatchyoutalkingaboutCan't say I'm feeling especially sorry for anyone who suddenly realizes they paid an extra two-grand for a $15k watch (they should have purchased a tastefully modded SKX ;- ) Meantime, good luck on your quest for the Hulk, they are pretty sexy in a green sort of way--can't wait to see the pics!

RayFThanks, but even though I’m on the ‘list’ I’m not sure I’d pull the trigger right now. The market is the lowest it’ll be in my lifetime, I think, so it’s probably all going into a vanguard etf. When the market was at its all time high oh so long ago (last month), I very unironically viewed steel Rolex as a decent investment opportunity (if you could get the right watch at actual msrp). I figured it would at the least keep 100% of the value over the years if not appreciate. Now? I’m not sure. Rolex has to shut down its factory, but they also have another production facility built and ready to go. I’m curious to see what will happen once this is all over.

WatchyoutalkingaboutThe only rational explanation is that this was such a hot seller that they keep bringing it back. They would never keep recycling watches that almost nobody wants to buy.

RayFWith every single collector and watch experts always saying watches are not good investments I’m kinda glad I could never really see the value or willing to pay over retail for anything this not so good at spelling Brooklyn carpenter did manage to collect precious metals in place of ROOOLEX

ED61Not that I have the cashflow for the big guns, but I don't think we should collect watches for investment purposes, A) it's hit or miss, and B) it kind of changes the hobby from a fun thing to a business thing. Hard to say what the right investment strategy is for times like these. If you've collected some gold/silver/platinum (or kryptonite) up to now, good for you. I'm sure that stuff will be more valuable than watches if things get really bad. Me, I'm an optimist--I keep hoping Seiko will change their minds about the SKX ;- )

RayFOnly gold is money, everything else is currency. The deal of the century was palladium at $500 - canada’s Maple leafs are a great palladium coin. In times of economic volatility, it’s often the collectibles that can be a good investment. Cars, artwork, toys, guns, and even watches can be stores of value and even investments - but of course only if you buy at the right price, don’t put all your eggs in one basket, and diversify.

RayFJM Bullion usually has better prices than APMEX, but local coin stores are always the best. What’s really....interesting is the gap in price between the paper markets and the actual billion sellers/dealers. Almost like the paper COMEX market is disconnected from physical reality.

WatchyoutalkingaboutI think as we baby boomers and then generation X begin to die out, luxury watch brands will die with them. Heck, even my wife has already gone entirely Apple watch and wants to sell her other watches. Younger generations do not appreciate the craftsmanship of a well made automatic or hand wound watch movement. Within another decade or two I believe their value will drop significantly.
truizWe're already talking about X dying out? The oldest among us just turned 60. The youngest among us are 41.
