Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Pro-Ject has released a pair of special-edition turntables themed around the seminal album. Each builds off a different model from the company’s popular series of belt-drive turntables. The Essential III features an acrylic platter with the same artwork as the bass drum on the album cover. It’s equipped with a 8.6-inch aluminum tonearm and a premounted Ortofon OM10 cartridge. Meanwhile, the higher-end 2Xperience SB has a resonance-optimized chassis with a handsome walnut veneer. Made in a limited run of only 1,000 units, it’s complete with a 9cc Evolution carbon fiber tonearm, a 2M Silver phono cartridge, and precise electronic speed control.
Note: At checkout, choose the Essential III Sgt. Pepper’s Drum (base price) or the 2Xperience SB Sgt. Pepper Limited Edition (+ $900).
What Hi-Fi praises the standard Essential III’s smart styling, relatively simply setup, and open, detailed sound. It says, “Another budget Pro-Ject turntable, another five-star review. The company simply can’t shake the habit of turning out top-class turntables. Just save up for the acrylic platter if you can.” Of the 2Xperience SB, the review site has this to say: “a turntable with great musicality, aiming for a full-bodied, luscious timbre that will suit many listeners down to the ground.”
