Expensive mistake. As others have stated, the split rings are crap.
That's ok, I replaced them.
Then the spring mechanism bound up. The copper appeared to become galled from the steel spring causing extra friction. That led to the spring bending.
Now it doesnt work at all.
What a peice of ill designed garbage!
Count me dissatisfied. I've not had my long. It seemed slick at first but then it started binding up. When I tried to separate my keys imagine my shock when the actual ring shockingly unwound with the force, becoming a useless piece of bent metal. The Kappa held fast. I'll have to see if I can separate it with some tools when I have the time.
DFensSounds like the spring is inserted wrong side up. If You want to try and repair it, get it separated, remove the coil spring and reinsert backside of the spring up.
I would contact support, and they can help You get it fixed or replaced.
My advice, get two midsized split rings that meet your requirements and a small ring (I use stainless steel fishing split rings for such things) to attach them to each other. It takes maybe 20 seconds to separate or attach once you practice a bit. They WON'T come apart at an in opportune time. Total cost is negligible, and you'll have a small bag of the fishing split rings left for friends.
Personally, I carry my car key fob separately on my belt in an OKAY'S key safe belt holder. Unless it says OKAY'S, save your money; it's an OKAY'S or it's an imitation, not an equal.
Sorry about your loss... theft can feel like a heartbreak.
A flashlight and the tiny knife are the only things I really would need to pull separate from my whole keychain. I open mail packages a few times a week, and in my last job I used a knife to open boxes at least 20 times a day, plus I learned the value of illumination and having even a small light with me. Made a habit, I suppose, but I still never got to the point where I carried pounds of keys that I never used!
I have had several of these for years that are morphologically very similar. I picked them up for a $1.50 at a local key shop. There are times when I feel that MD is pandering to the Rich and Foolish.
You are right, I had not seen that one when I wrote my post. I had read the reviews on the "Reviews" tab... Those seem overwhelmingly - by a large measure - positive. This one bad review below seems to be the exception.
I have read on many forums that Prometheus is known for their craftsmanship. Myself I have a couple of their flashlights, they are awesome and very, very well built; I just assumed these clips are of the same quality.
akmjolnirI have a similar tool that uses a magnet instead of Prometheus’ system here, and it only has a 4 lbs pull force to detach. Now, I carry my keys in my pocket instead of clipped to my belt or some other kind of ”outside” carry, but even with less than half the pull force required and a year for the magnet to weaken, it still requires a pretty intentional pull to separate (I can jiggle it with my house key, masterlock key, membership tags (gotta get that free Frosti), and car keys all hanging, and it doesn’t separate). With a 10 lbs pull, this device would require a two-handed grip and an intentional amount of force.
The ring holes are too small to fit directly on my FreeKey. So now I have to go from FreeKey to a small ring, to the quick-release, to a much larger ring that finally connects to my key fob (the larger ring is required because my key fob is a bulky plastic thing). That adds way too much bulk to my carry and just looks ridiculous.
I gifted something similar to this but it used a mechanism that requires you to push the two pieces together for them to disconnect -- re-attaching required you to awkwardly push the receiving end down before inserting the paired end, but for $5 I paid for that, I regret spending so much on this.
