Product Description
The original Prometheus Lambda spinning top, a combination of brass and aluminum, was hailed for its simplicity, precision, and long spin times. The man behind it—California-based strategist, machinist, and product designer Jason Hui—is back at it again with a new design, this time in solid brass and copper ... Read More

Holy shit Massdrop please stop using Fedex SmartPost. Delivering on horseback would be faster. It's infuriating watching my estimated delivery date pushed back by DAYS when the package is 1.5 hours away driving.

Shouldn’t the copper with stainless ball be + $12, not + $22?! If adding Ruby ball to brass top costs $18, then adding Ruby to Copper with stainless ball should be an additional $18, not $8, meaning the copper with stainless ball is mispriced.

It looks to me that they are giving an extra "discount" to the Ruby and copper combo. I guess to your logic you'd be just as happy to see the copper ruby price increase by $8 and then you can make the purchase you want in peace.

The original, and still the best, top on the market. Not only is it the most beautiful, and best designed, is the best balanced, and longest spinning top I’ve ever used, Plus, the large light opening through the handle shows off the ruby beautifully. Some have attempted to copy, but no one has done as well. As ObiWan would say: THIS IS the top you are looking for! ;-). Just be careful about signing up for Prometheus’s Email spam list.

Spam? Really? I get not even one a month. If you are getting multipe copies of the same email then you have mutliple email addresses listed with Jason. Try Unsubscribing. That works for me. Otherwise, I agree on the simple beauty of the Lambda.

I've always thought that the profile of Jason's original two-piece Lambda looked better than the current styling of the Solids. But, alas, I missed out on this beauty when it was originally released. Imagine my delight when a few weeks ago Jason re-released the original two-piece Lambda!
I promptly sold my Solid Brass and ordered it from his Store site And I couldn't be happier. True, it's a bit lighter than the solid Brass but it just as rock solid stable as the others. And with the ruby tip it looks stunning.

Now, if we could just get Jason to do a two-piece with a Copper ring, that would look amazing!

At least MassDrop usually refunds your money when it screws you over, unlike some kickstarter assholes who flagrantly STEAL customers’ money. (Just look up Znaps for one horror show I fell victim to) You must be new around here, and don’t understand that, in the early days, MassDrop delivered great deals on cool things that were unobtainable elsewhere. Many were happy to wait a few weeks, or even months, to save 50% plus and/or to get something that no one else was selling. At this point, MassDrop has essentially become an overpriced online IKEA apparently run by semi-retarded sloths. I do not know how else to explain the consistently high retail-level prices, slow and overpriced shipping, and occasional cancellation of orders without notice. (Edit: They apparently listened to our complaints, and now include cancellations in our histories, however “order canceled” makes it sound like the customer cancel the order, and does not record MassDrop’s culpability when it screws the pooch.) Anyway, this is a forum. It’s purpose is to voice opinions and to share with others. If you can’t handle civil disagreement, perhaps it is you who needs to go elsewhere (but that’s for you to decide, not me or anyone else to tell you. ;-). The rest of us are happy to hear of others’ experiences, both good and bad. It helps us make better buying/not-buying decisions. :-) Thanks to all of y’all who take the time to share your experiences, and point out good/bad prices when MassDrop is dropping or serving the ball well! <3

This top (ruby version) has been one of my first precision tops. Together with the 3 (brass, copper and steel) ceramic Vorsos, it remains my preferred one (among ~ 70 tops from ~ 20 different makers). In the previous drop, I bought the steel ball version and I'll take advantage of this new drop for buying one more ruby version for a gift: it's both an excellent spinner and a very good looking gift in its jewelry-like packaging - just hope she won't be expecting a diamond ring on seeing the small red box !

I have a Vorso Mk1 Cu/Ruby, Mk1 SS/Ceramic and Lambda/Ruby. I get longer spin times with the Copper, tonight achieving my longest of 14 minutes 32 seconds. With the SS the max I have been able to get is around 11:30. On average I get: Copper 9-12 mins, SS 7-11 mins and the Lambda is 7-10 mins. I think that it has more to do with the mass of the top, its geometry and less to do with the bearing, although I have no data to back this up. I get longer times with the Copper but its harder to spin than the SS or Lambda. The SS is a good comprimise. Once I got better I could get better times with the Copper. Weights: Copper 44.83g, SS 39.61g, Lambda 34.59g
To me the Lambda is a much more elegant beautiful design. its not designed for the longest spin. it's heirloom quality. The Vorsos are, to me, more utilitarian - a balance between geometry and mass in order to get an effiecient solution. Vorso is about engineering, Lambda is about craftpersonship. IMHO.

At the Vorso Massdrop page https://www.massdrop.com/buy/the-vorso-mk1-spinning-top/talk, I answered your point about the Vorsos. About the ruby vs ceramic vs steel bearing balls, I have the ruby and steel versions of the Lambda (I bought the steel one mainly for testing by myself if it made any difference). The result is, I see a small difference in my tests, but it is within the margin of statistical uncertainty. If I have more time some day, I may do longer tests, but the time required to possibly get a difference beyond statistical uncertainty may make it quite boring.

It's the must have top. I already have the ruby version. It looks great, it's very easy to spin and it's still my 1'' top with the best spinning times (excluding tungsten ones), my best time being 10:08 min. I just decided to buy the version with the stainless steel ball. I want to see by myself how much difference it makes.

I bought this 12/15, in a I believe a copper version (based on its patina), directly from his website when he had a special going during Christmas and it is my most favorite top. After period of practice, I can get now 10 - 13 minutes each spin. While I have a British top that is a bit more massive and thus spins longer, the Lambda is much nicer to carry and spins on a small 2 inch makeup mirror. For me that is great especially while travelling. The design and workmanship are superb. The ruby is a perfect size, not like some of the other tops that I bought where the rubies are so small that its almost impossible to spin appropriately without having the outer edge of the bottom hitting the spinning base due to the lack of height. You do not have that problem on the Lambda. While not cheap, relatively speaking, it will last a lifetime (unless you crack the ruby by mishandling it) and cost at that time are literally negligible. It's a great gift too and definitely a magnet for visiting co-workers especially if there is a challenge for the longest spin.
If you are looking to buy one and only one top, this would be a top contender.

I keep one of the SiC tipped versions of this top near my desk. All of my co-workers love it and rarely pass up an opportunity to spin it. I have it on a very small mirror, so the best spin I've been able to get out of it is 9.5 minutes. I'm quite tempted to get a ruby tipped version.

Just because it does not make sense to you, does not make it something crazy or makes anybody to buys the top a fool or crazed individual. Its the same as passing judgment on folks that are interested in purchasing gaming tables, prints of patent items (ahem, as per Cokeman's profile). You may want to broaden your horizon and look at research that over and over demonstrates that productivity rises if workers are engaging in doodling, fiddling, or handling small objects while they are contemplating their own work. Tops are an ideal item for folks that are using computers all day long as it breaks the monotony and activates cerebral areas not fully engaged by the primary mode of work. Take a look and allow yourself to be convinced to think differently beyond your bias and stereotype.

If you think that tops like this, and many other ones like it, are a buck, I can already tell that you either are less than 15 years old, or never got out of your parent's home to set foot, or had any dealings, w/the US manufacturing community. While a lot of the work is automated these days, costs due to design, materials, investments, machine time, maintenance and quality control take up a large amount of time that someone needs to get paid for. And since this is manufactured in the US, assume about $60 per hour in labor cost alone. As I have grown up in that community, I have no problem shelling out that money to my brothers and sisters since they have found a way to make a living based on their ingenuity and commitment to quality. In return, I get a product that I buy once in my life due to the quality of it. If you want to pay a buck for a top, buy some crap from Alibaba and get a spin time of probably 10 seconds and throw it away after a month or so because it is falling apart.. And by the way, Trump is an Asshole just in case you wonder.
