I originally got this as a gift for someone else but after plugging it in, gave them my old BOSE soundbar. The sound has a depth and crispness to it that extends beyond its size.
Overall definitely much improved sound for my tv. bluetooth has very limited reach. remote has button issues. sometimes volume up reads as mute. imperfect, but worth the $125 for sure.
The VS21 doesn’t live up to its Alpha namesake. It’s nothing special.
The Alpha VS21 doesn’t live up to it’s billing as being part of the PSB Alpha family. The sound is nothing like original PSB Alpha speaker. Instead a much more muddied presentation. The unit suffers from no controls or volume indicators on the front panel. If you lose the remote, you’re out of luck. You can do better than the VS21.
I can't believe they claim this is worth $599. First, it came with a bad battery, so it was completely inoperable until I went out and bought a replacement CR2025 battery because it has no physical controls. The remote is flimsy and terrible quality. It sounds worse than the $60 Taotronics soundbar it was replacing. It sounds muddy and muted. Since there is no return policy, I will probably just box it up and never use it again. Really makes me a little distrustful of Drop to be honest.
I'm amazed that this is normally $600. Sounds muddy, garbage clarity, and has terrible controls. It only works if you have the remote, so that sucks. Sounds much better feeding it with a dac (micca origen 2).
I had bought this for a TV room. This buy would better fit a computer desk or for a smaller size bedroom. Good sound, but my needs require something more.
Remote may come with dead batteries, so if you plan to buy it, buy new batteries beforehand. I didn't have any on hand, so I had to wait another day to actually use my purchase.
Also unit will not work without a remote. There is an option to program a universal remote to work with it, but you need a working remote to be able to program a new one. See the problem?
The build quality is great, the wood finish looks nice, and front panel simple, refined. The remote is nice as well, you will need a pinhole sized straight hook to pull the bottom off to replace the battery.
Great drop if you know what you want, and what you want is something modest with good sound and build.
Would increase in rating if there was any programming controls on the backside in case you break/lose your remote.
I am absolutely over the moon with my VS21. I am amazed how much sound can come out of such a small box. It genuinely doesn't need an external sub.....but since I already had one and the output was there, I hooked my Marantz Sub up to it.
It looks and more importantly feels top quality but make sure you have a 2025 battery in the house before you take delivery as like many others, my remote didn't even have a battery.
The only thing I wish it done better (well two things).......better dialogue performance/volume and some sort of a volume level indicator.....but at this price it is an absolute no-brainer.
