If you’ve already settled Catan and taken all the risks you can afford, it’s time to move on to a board game with more complex strategy and a new set of missions. Arriving with game play that’s familiar enough to comprehend yet unique enough to keep every round fresh, the Puerto Rico Board Game from Rio Grande Games makes game night something to look forward to again.
Note: This drop is limited to 80 copies.
Like Settlers of Catan, the central mission of Puerto Rico is to inhabit and develop a new land, outwitting your opponents in the process. Taking historical cues from the real settlement of Puerto Rico, the turn-based game has you rotate through nine individual roles, ranging from Trader and Builder to Captain and Governor. Each role carries unique abilities and responsibilities and players select new roles every turn.
The end goal is to accumulate more victory points than your rivals. Once you grow crops in your colony, you can exchange them for doubloons, which allow you to buy buildings. Players accumulate points for owning buildings, shipping goods back to Europe, and for manning large buildings. Each player has an individual colony board and all players share three ships, a trading house, and a supply of resources. Think Settlers of Catan with less chaos and more strategy, Puerto Rico is the board game for those of us bored by the rest.
