There is a shaft surrounding the socket held by spring tension that slides back which allows a captive ball bearing (detent) to move allowing the plug to be pulled out without any force. The two components will not separate without first pulling back the shaft. To reinsert the plug the shaft must also be pulled back.

It is "quick-release". I had a cheap version - same design, cheaper materials, and even it was effortless.
