Named OutdoorGearLab’s Editors’ Choice for “Best Synthetic Insulated Jacket” three years running, the Rab Xenon X jacket is designed for fast-and-light adventures in the alpine. And because it was recently updated with PrimaLoft Gold Active insulation for improved breathability with no cold spots, it’s better than ever. Made from Pertex Quantum fabric with 2 ounces of 60 g/m2 insulation, this technical puffy weighs just 12 ounces in the men’s medium. The Lycra-bound hood can be worn over or under your helmet, while the two-way YKK Vislon front zipper goes up to your nose to really seal out the cold. When the weather warms, the Xenon X stuffs neatly into its own internal pocket.
Note: At checkout, you’ll have your choice between the men’s jacket in ebony (XS–XL), ink (XS–XXL), or paprika (S–XL) and the women’s jacket in ebony (8–16) or electric (10–16).
The Xenon X’s slim fit makes for easy use with a climbing harness, as well as comfortable layering under a larger jacket when the forecast calls for it. Elastic cuffs slide over your gloves to keep snow from creeping in, while the internal insulated baffle, chin guard, and hem drawcord ensure you’re nice and cozy without limiting mobility.
Rab was founded by Scottish mountaineer Rab Carrington in 1980s—but the seed for the company was planted much earlier. In 1973, Carrington found himself in Buenos Aires, his expedition to Patagonia aborted due to a UK dock strike that had delayed the arrival of his equipment. He decided to stick around, and took up work sewing sleeping bags for the Argentinian army. Today, those skills and ethos of adventure can be seen in Rab’s full line of performance clothing, sleeping bags, mountaineering tents, and extreme expedition gear.
