The sizing is bizarre. It appears that the size 32 is a 34.5 waist. Logically (at least to me) those two numbers should match. Making them different breeds confusion.
atochaThe reason that the sizing doesn't match up, is because American clothing is made with vanity sizing. In other words, your other 34's are also likely a 36 or so, but say 34 to make you feel better about buying pants from that company. http://www.forbes.com/sites/rogerdooley/2013/07/29/vanity-sizing/
atochaAs others mentioned, this is definitely not bizarre, don't worry :)
The number associated with a pants size (say, 32) isn't actually a waist measurement in inches for two main reasons. First, almost nobody actually wears pants on their actual waist (closer to your hips, where you are wider). Also, there is vanity sizing built in so that you feel thinner than you actually are.
Most high-end denim brands will give the actual waist measurement so that you can measure a pair that fits well and compare them. There are lots of guides on the web that will help you figure out how to measure this. In general, though, it's ok to go with your normal size here.
IanAndersonThe entire concept of vanity sizing is as stupid as it gets. It's just one more example of big brother interfering with common sense, and whoever came up with the idea is a birdbrain. A lot of older folks actually wear their pants on their waist, something the younger folks can't relate to. The bottom line here is that there's no logical reason to size these jeans the way they are sized. It only adds to the confusion.
atochaDon't shoot the messenger! :)
I hear where you're coming from - and I'm personally a sucker for higher rise pants - but you have to admit that sizing pants in a 'normal' way (like other brands) will result in less returns and less unhappy customers.
Anyway, that's off topic. Back to these epic jeans. Here's a photo of 3Sixteen's shadow selvage, also made with an indigo/black warp/weft like these. I don't know how these will fade yet as he only started making them now, but if it's half as cool as these I will be very excited.
atochaThese guys are right. I learned this when I went to get a suit made for my wedding and told the tailor I was a 35 waist because 34 jeans/slacks are a little snug and 36 were a little loose. He smiled, measured me with tape, and informed me that I'm actually closer to 39" waist. Sigh.. Less beer and more gym for me.
Take actual measurements of your favorite fitting jeans and order the size that most closely matches that pair, rounding up 1 size if it's in-between to allow for shrinkage do to, uh.. beer.
