I bought a couple of RH Preyda stones a while back and found that they hadn't been cut properly so as to have right angles and the surface on one of them wasn't even flat. I wound up selling those stones to someone who was willing to work on them to get them usable. I bought stones from another vendor and have been much happier with them. (I went with a vendor that's actually in Arkansas and owns their quarry there.) I would also recommend that anyone looking to buy whetstones get at least 8" stones unless you're looking for something portable to use in the field or something. 5" is too short for most blades, and 6" is only a bit better. It doesn't matter as much if you are sharpening really small blades, but even there it's much easier if you can get used to making a full stroke without having to worry about running off the end of the stone.

stuartkohI've done 10-12" knives on the 6x2 stones without any issue. The 6x2 size is hard to beat, for the money. ETA: that's assuming your stones come flat, and true. If you've got to regrind them, no amount of saved money is going to make that suck less. If anyone else in prior drops can comment on either the geometry of the Preyda stones, or their customer service with out-of-true stones, I think that would be helpful.

DermottYeah, you can make a 6" stone work, but a longer stone makes it easier. I figure that, if I'm going to spend the money to get good natural Arkansas stones, I might as well spend a bit extra and get the larger stone. After all, Arkansas stones can last you years or decades, so the extra cost up front isn't significant when you average it out over years. (A good hard or black hard bench stone is something you might hand down to your kids some day...) I honestly don't know whether or not I just got a couple of bad stones from Preyda, and I didn't try to get them to make good on them. I just moved on and got something that I was happy with from the start.

stuartkohIf you don't mind me asking, which larger stones did you end up with? Need to get a set of slip stones, first, but I probably get enough use out of the 6x2s to justify springing for a set of proper bench stones, at this point. Did you go 8x2, or 8x3? Longer?

DermottI got them from Dan's. They have good slip stones and other shapes too. I mainly sharpen knives and scissors, but one of my friends is into carving and woodturning, and I know that he's had good luck with Norton slip stones for gouges. I'm pretty sure that both his synthetic and natural slip stones are from Norton. I do have a ceramic benchstone from Spyerco, the ultra-fine one. I like it for when I don't want to use honing oil because it works well with water or even dry. (You just have to use some Comet or other scouring powder to clean it once in a while.) They make slip stones and files too, and I bet they'd work well. Like Arkansas stones, the Spyderco ceramic stones are not very aggressive, so they're not something you'd want to use for repairing a damaged edge. Along with the benchstone, I have Spyderco's Sharpmaker too, and it's very nice for quickly maintaining an edge when I don't have time to bring all my sharpening supplies up and take over the kitchen table while I do some sharpening. :-) I actually hope that my experience with Preyda was not the norm. I don't want anyone to have trouble with the stones they've bought through this drop.

stuartkohDear Dermott your experience with Preyda is the norm because I have the same bad experience.πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ I ask expressely for a stone with angles no broken and no damages and arrived exactley the contrary. An angle broken and curved. and small breaks on a side. The reseller has denied all calling it irregularities. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ The man representing Preyda on my territory had the arrogance to deny at all the angle broken saying he didn't see it. It takes a lot of time to understand he was saying he didn't see it instead he sees it and it was a manner to deny the defect and the evidence. He also had the arrogance to tell me that it wasn't a defect and he sees an irregurality and also that because I was of different opinion that I should not phone. So yes sir this stones are of very poor quality because are full of defects: cracks and angle broken. It's a very poor standard quality.πŸ™ŒπŸ€’ I read on the web that Dan's stones are good quality infact they costs the about double! Preyda works bad and their operators are rude and arrogant. I was a sir deciding to retain the stone because after a long discussion the stone would offer to me was also with cracks and in case of return I would have to pay the cost for the returning and there was no guarantee to have back my money!! It's their policy. And their resellers are not honest in selling something with defects and deniying it and send something you expressely told them you didn't want. The thing more absurd was the reprentative of Preyda until the last final has denied the angle broken!!! πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈπŸ‘€ The Preyda representative pretended not to see the broken corner and although I insisted sending very clear photos he always denied saying it was an irregularity. It is a very smart company. He told me they don't use lasers to cut. However their stones have very low standards and are very badly worked. You must think they can't produce a stone thick more than 1/2 inch when Dan's stones arrive to 1 inch!!!! Unfortunately they are very clever.. πŸ˜’They use the universal answer: Strange, no one has ever complained. It is a phrase that they repeat to everyone and that I now know by heart !!! With this sentence you can deny any wrongdoing by knocking out whoever stands in front of you in one fell swoop!πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈπŸ™Œ Like you can see you are not the only one being fallen in the trap!!!!!!!πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ The only defence is to ask for a photo when you order a stone! So my suggest is stay away from Rh Preyda!! Better buying stones from Coticule Ardenne! These stones costs more but are perfect! In general before buying one should take a lot of informations on web but this is very difficult being these Companies and reseller very smart and kind before you bought. Neverless not all are even and still there are some working in the correct way and honest! Perhaps everyone should buy from resellers like Amazon where the return is not denied and but Amazon like others don't sell everything. Best regards

razor5680Hmm... Coticule isn't a very similar stone. Please post pictures, here, of your defective Preyda's, so the rest of us can benefit from your experience. I'm sorry you had a poor experience... I love Arkansas stones, but poor quality ones are VERY frustrating.

DermottDear Dermott If also you have had the same bad experience there is no reason to prove what I told. Others people don't need to see the stone also because usuall people believe in reviews without evident interest in say things not true. So I can't understand your request!πŸ™„πŸ˜΅πŸ˜’ It looks strange and with no reason . I speak about a conversation not recorded and we are on a blog not in a tribunal. So you can believe me and have no reasons to ask proves. Coticule are different stone but sure not inferior! They costs also much more and are worked much better. Personally I have also the most expensive japonese wetstones and no one can tell they are inferior or superior without analasying the razor with a professional microscope! Take in count a Zeiss stereo costs abour 3000€. A study needs a good tecnique and identical parameters in the sharpening! Professional using microscope usually use artificial stones ib the beginning and for a more regular cut edge use a coticule or a Naniwa lv5'' that in good conditions costs 1000€!!!!and can be easily surpassed by a bench stones or other s natural stones with a perfect prifile like a Turingia! The insertion on these Japanese stones are often inside and you can damage the razor! If encountered. Best Regards
