Picked this up a few years ago. wish i could have gotten the 3 stone, but was happy with the 2. The stones are nice, Will do the job on regular sized pocket blades, not Chief style or long blades. My stones were flat and level. I get more use from a strop set with progressive polish blk, Grn, White. These Stones are Good to have when you need them.

Only the box is Deluxe, the rest is pretty standard kit. Hard to imagine you couldn't put something similar together on your own, and maybe save a buck or two. Wonder if the guy hawking these is related to someone over at Ingersoll?

Did they not include the 3 stone set in this drop? Or did it sell out in two days? I dont really understand how drops like this (from my understanding they are essentially group purchases from the vendor fulfilled by drop) can sell out unless they order an allotment ahead of time. But if the latter is the case why is the shipping date a month and a half away? I know there are other factors in this particular time period affecting us all and this could affect drop also (particularly shipping). I still believe the 2 stone set is a great deal and I might very well join the drop. I do not have a small hard black arkansas stone in this size and could use one. As someone who mainly collects folders in the 2.5-3.75" range, these small stones can be very useful. Still I'd rather have the 3 stone set if it was available. Was anyone able to order the 3 stone set for 10 bucks more on this drop or was it never an option this particular time? Thanks

JoekenWell that unfortunately just bugs me. I dont understand how something that is ordered from the vendor after the drop ends (once they finally know what they will need to fulfill) could be sold out. If it was an allotted amount they preordered it would make a great deal more since. But if that were this case it would not take til mid april to ship (I know the virus is involved but other in stock/Drop studio items are still shipping within two business days) Maybe I'm just a sore loser. But it seems like every drop I request nowadays is gone by the time I go to purchase it or see the email. If not the whole drop then the particular option I want. This one is my fault for waiting two days to get around to joining in thinking something like this just could not sell out. If it had been a purple original keen or a super gold delica exclusive that sold out in two days I'd completely understand. But I guess I didnt think sharpening stones were that high in demand. What can i do other than wait again for another few months? I guess I could get the set I want somewhere else at a steeper price. At least now I know to join this drop immediately next time.

figured I'd drop this here - New to the pocket knife game. I've got a D2 kershaw, an S110V spyderco, and a few Chinese "marked S30v for better resell" so probably alphabet soup (a couple of which came wicked sharp) knives that I got to practice sharpening/honing on. Right now I've got a set of DMT dia-sharp credit card things. I restore fountain pens and I've also got a surgical Arkansas stone for nib work. I guessing this is not the system I want.... or is it? I've been looking at the spyderco options, but they're a tad pricey. Opinions vary pretty widely in the research I've been doing, so I thought I'd ask the friendly massdrop mob. What about a strop? Thanks!

UsergradeIf you want an inexpensive natural stone set to get you rolling, this should do the trick. The two-stone set is probably sufficient, if you've already got a Surgical Black stone. The "hard black" stone in the three-stone set, here, is exactly the same as "surgical" black; they're also sometimes called "true black", "true hard", or "translucent", depending on colour. All of those are the same grade. The three-stone set comes with slightly larger stones, which is a bit nicer. One of the previous purchasers mentioned the stones being not-so-flat... that would be my only concern with this buy. Probably wouldn't matter for most pocket knives, but more sensitive blades (fine kitchen knives, razors) really wouldn't appreciate it.

I bought a couple of RH Preyda stones a while back and found that they hadn't been cut properly so as to have right angles and the surface on one of them wasn't even flat. I wound up selling those stones to someone who was willing to work on them to get them usable. I bought stones from another vendor and have been much happier with them. (I went with a vendor that's actually in Arkansas and owns their quarry there.) I would also recommend that anyone looking to buy whetstones get at least 8" stones unless you're looking for something portable to use in the field or something. 5" is too short for most blades, and 6" is only a bit better. It doesn't matter as much if you are sharpening really small blades, but even there it's much easier if you can get used to making a full stroke without having to worry about running off the end of the stone.

Hmm... Coticule isn't a very similar stone. Please post pictures, here, of your defective Preyda's, so the rest of us can benefit from your experience. I'm sorry you had a poor experience... I love Arkansas stones, but poor quality ones are VERY frustrating.

DermottDear Dermott If also you have had the same bad experience there is no reason to prove what I told. Others people don't need to see the stone also because usuall people believe in reviews without evident interest in say things not true. So I can't understand your request!🙄😵😒 It looks strange and with no reason . I speak about a conversation not recorded and we are on a blog not in a tribunal. So you can believe me and have no reasons to ask proves. Coticule are different stone but sure not inferior! They costs also much more and are worked much better. Personally I have also the most expensive japonese wetstones and no one can tell they are inferior or superior without analasying the razor with a professional microscope! Take in count a Zeiss stereo costs abour 3000€. A study needs a good tecnique and identical parameters in the sharpening! Professional using microscope usually use artificial stones ib the beginning and for a more regular cut edge use a coticule or a Naniwa lv5'' that in good conditions costs 1000€!!!!and can be easily surpassed by a bench stones or other s natural stones with a perfect prifile like a Turingia! The insertion on these Japanese stones are often inside and you can damage the razor! If encountered. Best Regards
Bought it without much thought as a drunk purchase and started wondering why it's named a "honing kit." From my understanding, honing and sharpening are different, so would this then not be used for sharpening? Also, what's the best way to clean these?

Instructions_unclearDish soap and water works fine for cleaning. I don't really clean mine every use, but when they start feeling glassy, a scrub seems to help.

If somehow the stones ship earlier than the expected date, I'll be thrilled! I've got a few blades in need of sharpening.

PaLeeLeft looks like soft. Right looks like hard black/true black/surgical. Middle one is probably the hard stone, then... I've seen those either be lighter, or darker. If you've got a pocket knife, try them out. The surgical black will feel smooth (not quite glassy), and the soft will feel quite scrapy.

Hmm, just noticed that the 3 stone kit is now sold out.
With quantities limited to 30 of each kit and only 34 kits purchased in total it seems almost everyone is going for the larger 3 stone kit.
