dgt5You’d be fine sharpening VG-10 and 154CM on Arkansas stones, but you’d have a hell of a time trying to sharpen S30V.
Go with a sharp maker in my opinion. Or if you want to use benchstones... pick up the Norton Crystolon and Norton India stone to start.
dgt5This is good if you plan to practice. Flat stones can be beginner but require some skill before you can work a good edge on a blade. Are you wanting to sharpen as a hobby or do you want to get it done quick? The Sharpmaker is fine and relatively easy so would be a better beginner unless you want to practice and learn to sharpen by hand. You might also want to look at the lansky sharpening system which you will see on Massdrop pretty regularly. Watch some Youtube videos on the different systems. If it were me, I would get a kit from Lansky to start.
dgt5It's an okay place to start, if you want to learn Arkansas stones. Treat them nice, and they should last forever. Might be able to get them a little cheaper if you buy individual stones... but having them in one box is kind of nice.
I sharpen everything from straight razors to O1 and D2 on Arkansas stones, no problem.
Haven't tried S30V... but if I had an S30V knife, I'd use the same set of stones.
They cut slow. Requires some patience, and a steady hand, for the tool steels.
FixallGo with the sharpmaker if you are into pocket knives, or go with a diamond stone.
Will these stones work, sure, so would a brick, but just like knife steels have progressed so has sharpening tech.
