Unlike the Thor 4, which was significantly smaller than the others in the Thor series, the Thor 5 brings the knife back to a formidable 8.5 inches overall. Made with an integral frame—in which a pocket is created for the blade by removing material from a solid bar of TC4 titanium—the Thor 5 is rock solid Read More
Really on the fence about this. I do like the knife and this is the best price you can get for this, but is it worth it? I am not sure.. Integrals are expensive though, there isn't much better you can do for them. Someone point me in the direction of another more reasonable if you know of any, thanks.
Thor 2 was a 3.75 inch full sized folder. And the Chinese brands currently making the well-known integrals are, if anything, more reputable than most other companies on the market right now short of actual custom makers.
pixllMy bad, I meant to say the thor 4 was too small, the one Jubilantbeat mentioned. Which was 2.3", way too small. 3.75 would be a great size. And back to what Jubilantbear mentioned, the chinese no-names on aliexpresss. I definitely do not mean the established chinese companies like Rike, Reate, or We.
IMO the milling work isn't that impressive and I dont find it unique enough to pay Chris Reeve price for this. There's no functional value for an integral knife other than demonstrating technical prowess of the CNC milling machine, so it really isn't worth $472 after tax for me.
Also considering other alternatives, i think the WE702 is more appealing and i can get it for less than $300 total. I can also buy really high end Reate knife, or even the Damasteel version of Reate Starboy or Horizon D for around the same price($475-485) shipped. I could also get 2 ZT or 1 ZT and 2 Spyderco etc...
massdrop01I hear you on this, don't get me wrong, I can appreciate an artistic knife, I'm just a little biased towards companies that offer great warranties; people can bash ZT or Benchmade as being over priced, but you can't knock the fact that they offer $30 blade replacements in the event you wear out or break a knife blade; that's something hard to beat and gives you peace of mind when using a knife.
EjashHave you heard of Compliance edge? Guy makes fixed blades but one heavy duty folder as well (Flipper and non-flipper). Small business and no factory. Might have got one if I could afford it ($800) . Fixed blades are around 250-300. Love or hate design, but he is just one of the many small custom knive makers I've come across on instagram, but he seems super passionate about the heat treat process and has videos on youtube on how he hand makes the knives start to finish.
My only question is - will the Thor 6 be coming to Massdrop as well? Because I *want* this knife, but I *need* the Thor 6.
As to any price complaints or "X knife from Y company is cheaper and therefore a better deal" comments that might have already been made and are sure to come as this discussion continues, this is a fairly large knife with a full titanium handle featuring very nice anodizing and incredible milling work. It also has a beautifully made blade using a premium blade steel. If you aren't willing to pay for all of those things, then you obviously are not the knife's target audience, but it's pretty comparable to other knives with similar production methods and materials. The Benchmade Anthem and Spyderco Nirvana for example. Saying that you can get another knife at a lower price that doesn't have all the same work or materials going into it is pretty much like saying water is wet.
Agree with the others. Beautiful knife, great blade materials, love it. But tc4 frame and price point is insane. They make great knives but at this price I will go big and get a custom instead. Under $300 I might go for it.
Lbd11Yes I do have a Rike integral folder. Older model, and love it. I like this design even more. But i cant buy them all. Just a poor boy and have to asses them one by one. Nothing against the maker but I don't see a deal here.
