Support for Alternative Layouts
This is a summary of how alternative layouts have been supported by kits such as Colevrak and Homing. It is not a discussion of alt layout performance and development, but if that interests you I highly recommend starting with Pascal Getreuer’s A guide to alt keyboard layouts (why, how, which one?). It’s a concise and comprehensive overview with links to some great sites that go deeper. He also has a separate Links about keyboards page. The Keyboard layouts doc he recommends explains layout goals and metrics in detail, summarizing the alt layouts discussed here as well as more than one hundred others. Things that I like about the product:
1) POM keycaps!! Even if the lettering comes off POM is so rare and nice to type on that I'll just deal with it. [PS: MD since you are so cozy with Noppoo - how about a POM keycap drop?]
2) Though the author (and the people he is writing to) think that less tactility is bad - I'm all for as light and linear as possible. In fact I would be excited if a 35g variant existed. But 45g (40g?) sounds right up my alley.
3) Shorter key throw than regular Capacitive - I think 4mm is too long which is why I like Alps so much. Plus I'm too lazy to mod so it's nice it comes from the factory like this.
4) Thinner metal plate and stock dampening might actually make this comfortable to type on. I find the Realforce and Novatouch keyboards hard on my fingers/joints after a given point in time.
5) Hardwired cable - personal preference.
??? Not sure about 'whistling' ... will have to try and see. However knowing the review was based on uber thin ABS caps, maybe the thick POM will cover some of that up.
