The setup was straightforward, plug in the 5V cable, and connect it to the power supply. The 16 pin cable only goes in one way into the microcontroller and just need to make sure its on the IN connector on the LED array.
It works as advertised, but there are some things that could be improved on. The input audio has to amplified A LOT before anything starts being displayed on the LED panel. I have tested it on my PC and my phone and on my One Plus 6, i have to set the volume to Max to get any reasonable spectrum on the LED panel. This is before even using an audio splitter, just outputting straight to the microcontroller. My theory is that there isn't an amplifier on the board, causing the microcontroller to not be able to read data, OR the input impedance is too high.
I have also tried comparing the kit to a software audio visualizer, and it seems the SainSmart kit has a slight delay (around 1/2 a second). This is noticeable by just playing any Bass heavy song with a consistent beat.
A suggestion for anyone else that has this, put a piece of white paper or a piece of opaque plastic on top of the LED array to disperse the light. It makes the LEDs not as bright and intense to look at.

Totally unhappy with this drop / was presented as an easy to build kit - self contained and ready to go / NOT AT ALL!!! unparsable instructions in Mandarin - NO POWER SUPPLY INCLUDED - what's up with that - and NO CLEAR DIRECTIONS on how to source appropriate power. SUPER BUMMED. Now I need to find an experienced maker to salvage this dumpster fire. Come on MASSDROP - stay classy. This sucked!
