3D, Organically

SainSmart has been making a name for itself in the DIY Electronics community by making extremely high quality products for ridiculous pricing. This drop is no exception, this is the absolute lowest price for this kit to be found anywhere. For the core electronics you need to build your own 3D printer, order the SainSmart RAMPS Electronics Kit and you’ll be steps away from a fully functional system.

System Demystified

To understand what you’re getting, let’s take a step back and explain the 3D printing process. After you come up with an image or shape on your computer, use the SainSmart MEGA to interface with your computer through a USB cable. The MEGA sends the image to the RAMPS electronics, where your digital signals are translated into physical motion. The A4988 stepper motor drivers are connected to the RAMPS board, and they send the physical commands to connected motors that build the 3D model. With this simple, but elegant system, you can print incredibly complex shapes and figures in your home.

Further Information

RAMPS interfaces an Arduino Mega with the powerful Arduino MEGA platform and has plenty room for expansion. The modular design includes plug in stepper drivers and extruder control electronics on an Arduino MEGA shield for easy service, part replacement, upgrade-ability and expansion. Additionally, a number of Arduino expansion boards can be added to the system as long as the main RAMPS board is kept to the top of the stack. This board is mostly based on Adrian's Pololu_Electronics and work by Tonok. Copper etch resists methods suggested by Vik. Also inspired by Vik's work with EasyDrivers. The circuit design is based mostly on Adrian's Pololu_Electronics Joaz at RepRapSource.com supplied initial pin definitions and many design improvements. Much inspiration, suggestions, and ideas from Prusajr, Kliment, Maxbots, Rick, and many others in the RepRap community.
