5 star for the support service. I got a replacement promptly with personal email for inquiry. Great service. The earbud itself is 3/5. It does deliver what it is supposed to deliver. Good response in all the frequency range. Slight skewness in high frequency (15~20k ish) -a bit louder (2~3db). Hi-hats break through in the mix overall in any genres. Something that bugs me is way you are supposed to wear it and the ambiance control. Ambiance control is just white noise level going up in the background. Also, if you turn on ambiance too high it would start to distort the bass severely don't know why exactly. You can adjust the cable to wear it way you want either around your neck or like a necklace, which both seems to be not too comfortable personally. Below is my review for the replaced one. Very bad sound quality. There is a possibility that I got a flawed one.
  1. High Frequency 15k~20k are super saturated and super louder than any other frequency levels (if this is not a flawed one they probably thought high-fidelity = high frequency boost)
  2. Very small stereo image. Felt like I was listening to a near mono channel.
  3. Ambiance Control does not work at all. Don't know why this even needs battery. (for high freq boost?)
  4. The material used for the earbud cable is so trash.
Summary: go buy 40$ earbud that would sounds 50 times better than this trash.

yeah there’s a series of small holes drilled into the aluminium. The light comes out of those. If the battery isn’t flat then I guess you got unlucky and got a defective unit. I agree the sound is not good without the amp turned on. Hope you can get them replaced. They really are a good audio experience with the amp on.
bosehoWe received boseho's unit and figured out what the problem was. He was using a Duracell Quantum battery which has a very short positive terminal compared to most other AAA cells (0.8 vs 1.2 mm). The battery was held just short of making contact and the amplifier never came on. A small piece of foil tape added to the tip solves the problem. If anyone would like to try an upgraded battery the best choice is the Energizer Ultimate Lithium. This battery has long life and a higher voltage (1.8 vs 1.6 volts) which provides a higher undistorted output.

The staging of these IEMs is very good and the instrument separation creates a truely immersive listening experience. These IEMs initially impressed me, however not as much as I expected them to. That changed, once I gave them a well mastered track. They are easily on par if not better than my Bowers and Wilkins P7s. Even if it’s not your taste, I recommend listening to something well staged like “Amber Rubarth’s sessions from the 17th ward”, and these IEMs will really shine.

These aren't really useful as earplugs. The battery pack and amp is heavy because it uses a AAA battery. It also does not have a built-in clip which it would seem would be a very obvious thing to include. Thus, if you are standing at a concert, the battery pack will pull down on your ears. It also doesn't really get to true silence. You can hear significant white noise with it on. The sound quality is very impressive. I like it more than my dual driver IEM's. the way I would describe its sound is that it is a very full sound, without the petty games of V-shaped that most IEMS pull. That alone makes it a keeper. However, I had bought them with the intention of using them as earplugs, of which it is not very good.

I can’t believe this has a original MSRP of $1150!!
Very poor fitment, stiff cable, heavy “amp box” with an awkward clip system. Cannot be used with no battery . (it will still play music with unit turned off, but it will sound very bad with zero low end)

Comfort is great, sound is amazing with a bit of EQ. Only thing bothering me is the weight of the amp/control is making the IEMs drop off my ears. For $90, its a steal.

Pretty flat and, I’m not a bass head, but they do seem a little lacking in the bass department. I wore them several times and considered writing a one star review based on my initial experience, but I put in some time with getting a proper seal/fit and, for the price, I am very pleased. I have never owned a set of IEMs that were so particular about fit. Again, once seated properly, they had a very flat response with a decent sound stage, but people that enjoy boomy bass will be disappointed. Also, the I agree with boseho that the cable could be better.

I believe that I received a defective unit (mine sounds petty much as @boseho described in his review) so I shipped it back to Santa Cruz Audio who is supposed to send me a new one. Their quality control clearly needs some improvement...

The sound profile seems fairly flat to me, so coloration through EQ is an important step if you wish to boost some part of the spectrum. The passive noise cancellation seems to work quite well for me. I had to switch to Comply foam tips to get a good seal that stayed put. My ears just did not provide the necessary ridge for the flex ears to press against. Overall, I like them and am glad I bought them. ——— Alright, so now that I have had them and realized that they will never actually stay in my ears without super glue and that I will only get to experience what they are capable of for 30 seconds after shoving whatever eartip I have purchased as a hope against hope to have work as far into my ears as I can stand, I can confidently tell you that if they would stay in my ears, I would use them for when I wish to listen while being out in the world. But as it is, they will simply gather dust and eventually make their way to a landfill. Such is life.

Very good mids, but not for everyone
All in all these are some of the clearest sounding iems one can buy. That being said the bass is heavily lacking, even for someone who isn’t super into that. You basically need something to tune the audio like a equalizer so that you can get the most out of this product. For the $90 I spent on massdrop it’s a good purchase, but for anything above that I wouldn’t recommend unless you really are into a raw frequency response chart that looks like a trapezoid...
