The MSRP is actually 600$ not 500.. 500 was an early adopter thing if i recall properly. and even at these prices AMD is losing a lot of money.
NOT defending AMD here, its just they are in a bad way with vega, its an architecture designed back when the 200 series was out, they once again over engineered and under optimized their cards, because of this the price is high to begin with, then there's someone on the retail chain adding a shit ton on top of the already slightly bloated price they have on these cards.
and the sad part is AMD is NOT seeing any of that money, so even tough cards are selling out in my country at 1200$ a piece (56 all over the place some at 1000, some at 750, some right up there at 1200$ with the 64) .. amd barely gets their 600$ for them which about breaks even with spending
yes HBM2 is so fucking expensive RN that it costs AMD about 600$ to make one of these cards.. while a gtx 1080 dies cost about 50$ to make so the whole card should be below the 200$ mark total production cost.
.. so AMD make almost no money at all with Vega RX cards at this time .. they just prefer to at least have an answer to nVidia, however bad, than to not have anything at all.. while Nvidia again as always is making a very large profit on their cards. while also consistently moving their price ranges up, selling their mid range as high end, basically giving you less but charging you more, but hey its not like we have a choice as the only valid pick for gaming and many workloads currently is nvidia, vega for gaming is not a wise decision by any stretch of imagination. maybe once the price will come down, the optimization comes in, (by the time the card won't be relevant anymore) but right now, no real reason to buy it IF you don't plan on mining or using its compute performance for something else then gaming.
its a real shitshow with this card, they would've been better off not releasing them at all. but that's AMD for ya..

$499 is the MSRP for standalone Vega 64 and it will be restocked (eventually?) per the official statement from AMD. Everything you're saying is based on rumors and not any official or proven information, though I do agree with you that this release has been a shitshow.

xenonnatiThat is false it was comfirmed by AMD that there was no rebate like that one guy claimed. His claims were false and MSRP is $499. Stores were taking apart bundles and selling the cards at high prices.
