I got the Seeed Rainbow Cube last year. https://www.massdrop.com/buy/diy-rainbow-cube-kit It was 4x4x4 at $75. As others have mentioned, this drop has 8X as many voxels. These use addressable LED's, so there are only 3 wires per LED (power, ground, and signal) and they daisy-chain. Addressable RGB LED's are typically about $1 per LED when buying discretes, and $0.40 in a strip. It would be difficult to buy the raw materials for much less than the $290.

Will2BIt's pretty cool, and I totally believe that it's pretty expensive to build. Still, not $300 worth for me, sorry.
