Been looking to get a Seek Outside tent for summer backpacking and early season hunting, this fits the bill perfectly. Made in the USA, great customer service, relatively quiet and good performance in dusty conditions Hopefully we get the orders!
Seems like there are a few subtle differences between this and the Lanshan 2 (L2).
The outer of the L2 is 15D silnylon, while this is 30D (presumably more durable).
Bathtub floor of L2 is 20D, can't find a spec on the Nest.
L2 will be tight for people taller than 6', the Eolus has 8' of space.
As I'm 5'10", the Lanshan 2 works fine for me. Over 200 trail miles so far with no durability issues. Much cheaper as well ($100 shipped vs. $350). Just my two cents
Edit: +200 more JMT miles. Still going strong
JerkyKenNot to bash these designers, as I appreciate all effort put into designing great gear... but I was definitely thinking the same. Glad I got in on that drop!
Those of you saying there's lighter cheaper trekking pole shelters, can you recommend some? This seems like a good deal to me but if there are cheaper options I'd love to see them
PaulyesterThere are lots of options out there. But it is true that often the lighter you go the less durable the fabrics. The designers of this tent clearly chose for a heavier but more durable option. The Massdrop made X-Mid by Dan Durston is probably the all around best lightweight tent that is getting lots of people talking right now. But aside from that there's the classics of the Lanshan, tarptents, six moon design lunar duo. Google some of those and watch some youtube videos and you'll get the jist.
Outbound_JesseYou are right, Seek Outside clearly aming for a durable, lightweight option without compromise. I think it is well done, consider 30D, 5K zipper etc. TT SS2 is the closest in my book but fails in the zipper design. I think you cant compare a chineese tent to US made really so Lanshan was out of my book really fast. In the end there was only Eolus (that I also bought) and TT SS2, more or less the same price and weight.
If the X.mid 2P was awalible the decision would have been harder, but I did not want to wait to the end of the year!
So... you're paying big tent money, and not getting big tent features. You can get a free standing big anges tent that weighs less and is faster to setup.
You realize that that's 24 oz and 175 for the outer shell right? It's essentially just a fitted tarp. Add another 165 + 18 oz and you've got your self a full tent @ $340 42oz.
This looked interesting at first until as others have mentioned it has no inner, which costs a lot more.
Now it's one of the many expensive ULW pole tents around.
I ordered this exact tent last week, looks like a wonderful design and nice solutions. Especially the zipper less door and the choice to go with #5 YKK zippers in the inner… that with a good weight did it for me. Off course it is not a “superlight” tent (fly+inner)… if you like that just go their site and order it in Cuban. Looking forward to the delivery and try it out.
