Are Seiko 5's as good as MVMT watches? I think I need to check with my style guru on YouTube. :-)

tony.hillSeiko 5's are extremely solid, well regarded tool watches, with a long history and a very loyal fan-base. There's even a fairly massive cottage industry that's sprung up around modifying/customizing basically every part of a large number of 5 models so that people can make them their own unique pieces. Tend to use (IIRC) NH35/NH35A movements, which are solid, workhorse automatic movements. I own a couple, and they're really good, daily-driver type automatics. MVMT has only just put out their first automatic, though it should be solid, using a Miyota caliber. Honestly don't know much about their reliability or quality though, but the Movado group just purchased them, so they must have seen something in them.

tony.hillAnything is better than mvmt watches. Mvmt are literally cheap $20 retail Chinese Alibaba watches that they have their name slapped on and charge you 1000% more for it. If you really must have one of these cheap junk watches, go to Alibaba or AliExpress and buy that same pos for around $20. It's the same exact watch without the logo.

ricardjorgInteresting. It's just one guy's opinion - which I agree with - but in reality I see that MVMT is basically another fashion watch company, and as such it is not worse or better than most of the other fashion watch brands out there - you know, the kind you can buy in malls in those watch stalls, in fashion outlets, or in clothes stores. These brands all rely on cheaper components and cheap manufacturing, probably relying on the same group of parts manufacturers. MVMT does not seem to be worse or better (the previous post made they seem like the bottom of the bottom), it seems they just have a better marketing strategy! This Seiko then, even with a very low price, is probably a bit better than a fashion watch - not by leaps and bounds, just a bit better.

BobrazOh, it definitely is better. This watch has a reliable automatic Seiko movement, which is already worth more than an entire MVMT watch. It has a display back window, so you can appreciate the rotor and movement. And it's made by an historical company in horology. There's no way that MVMT's $3 rebranded watches come even close in quality to anything that Seiko offers. The downside of this Seiko compared to a MVMT watch will be the size. This watch is much smaller. But if you look online for other Seiko 5 models, you'll be able to find some 40mm ones even. Still at a good price, and still durable and made with high quality. Some people have had their Seiko 5 watches for 30 years.

ricardjorgAgreed! Proof that you can still produce relative quality watches for small budgets (the movement is likely Chinese and some have reported +/- 40 seconds a day variability, but can still be durable).
