I know, I know, “history” and “heritage” and blah blah blah, but I still think Seiko would sell a trillion more of these if they just got rid of that stupid “5”!!!
CJ27I guess by “trillion” I meant “at least one”. That being me.
But seriously though, I can’t be the only person who interprets “5” to mean “basic” or “discount line.” Despite its historical significance, it cheapens the product and clutters the dial for no justifiable reason. (If you’re able to name the “5 Sports” the number is referring to and explain how this watch is better suited to them than any other watch with a 12-hour dial and 100m water resistance, more power to you.)
johnnylarueI risk showing my watch-geekery to be way too huge, but the "5" doesn't stand for any sports, but five qualities all the watches in the line have had since their inception. I'll refrain from going into them so people don't point at me yelling "NNNEEERRRRRDDDD!!!" ;)
CJ27Son of a gun! I bow to your Nerd-dom and thank you for the correction. But riddle me this: how did that ‘5’ make it onto watches like the JDM 6139 chronos, with their 70m water resistance and crown at 3 o’clock, for instance?
johnnylarueThe crown position doesn't matter (the list on Wikipedia is wrong); I have a 50th Anniversary 5 Spacewalk Homage (goddamn that name) that has a crown at 12, so it's essentially a bullhead. According to Seiko (at least as I understand it), the five requisite bits are:
Water Resistance (but no minimum depth required, so some are rated to only 50m)
Day/Date indicator
Automatic Winding movement (no specific movement, though most modern ones use some variant of the 7sXX or 4rXX caliber)
Honestly? I have no problem with the '5' shield on the face, but I absolutely HATE that they have added the "Sports" script underneath the shield on so many recent releases. I think that is what makes it look cheap/crowded, and I wish they'd move away from that. Ah well.
(Commence pointing and yelling "NNNEEERRRRRDDDD!!!" now....)

- DiaShock (in-house shock resistance system)
- Diaflex mainspring (their "unbreakable" mainspring)
