- the 017 adds a signed crown ("X" Prospex logo), the 001's crown is unsigned--most Seikos have an "S" on the crown. - the 017 also adds the previously mentioned DiaShield coating on the stainless steel, which makes it more scratch resistant.
Forum postings from a few months ago mentioned the outgoing SBDX001 selling for about $300 less than the street price of the new SBDX017. Currently, the lowest I can find the SBDX017 is $1865 from Seiya (a very reputable exporter); the lowest price I can find for the SBDX001 (other than here) is on Rakuten for $1540. So that's about right, and the price here is a decent savings.
However, for me, I'd hit CA tax from Massdrop, which brings the price almost half way towards the SBDX017. And I think I would like the DiaShield coating anyways..
