It uses a solid pin with a small metal sleeve. I lost one already, and without it, the links don't seem as secure. Gladly, I didn't need the one I lost, it's also something to keep in mind. If you get someone else to do it for you, also make sure that it's seated properly, as the first time I did it, it wasn't in as securely as thought.
