So now that these are back on DROP, and they just recently “dropped” the HiFiMan 5XX what should I get first? I’ve never had planar headphones before and I’d like to step up my audiophilia a bit.
What I have heard before are AKG 7XX and the Sennheiser 6XX.

ClarkinBinarythese were great when they first came out. But they are not good value any more since the clones have come out. The Monoprice M570 is $189 on Amazon right now. At $480 you are paying more for the craftsmanship than the sound. I would say start with the 5XX (or even 4XX) if you are new to planar. Also M570 and swap in the Sendy Aiva pads ($30) is also a good value.

iucoenThat’s really good insight, thank you! I am really interested in the 5XX, because I’ve heard from reviews that they have a more aggressive sound.

ClarkinBinaryI would recommend the 4xx over 5xx right now honestly. The 5xx has thusly been reviewed to be very technical, which isnt really great as an introduction to planars. The 4xx is easy to drive, sounds great, and overall very nice budget entry to planars.

fishcanflyYeah I would second that. 4XX went on sale last holiday season for $130. At that price I would definitely take them over 5xx.
