Ouch. I paid retail for mine. The is great but setup was hugely annoying, including room correction that refused to work and a sub that was refusing to connect. App and firmware upgrades seem to have solved these bugs but I stilll get the occasional mute when the TV is turned on - can't tell if this is the TV or the Ambeo. Volume up fixes the glitch. The Max puts out pretty decent bass - unless you really want massive movie thump you can go without the sub, which does an admirable job.
