I guess, the Drop has forgotten what made the Massdrop so unique. The marketing genius was in rebranding of the overpriced but quality products and selling them for half the price that seems more realistic. Or creating a community around some new and unique products so that we take part in their creation. And now the Drop wants us to pay the same price as in retail shops but then wait for 1.5 months until it's delivered? Seriously, Drop?

Alex_MayAre you forgetting about the $300 discount on this product? They're offering a $300 discount in the form of Drop points. 30,000 points / 500 points for $5 = $300 off

Alex_MaySennheiser has MAP pricing in the US for all authorized dealers, so that’s why everybody has the same discounts right now. What Drop is also offering is the rewards points, as @PandasFinest said. Sennheiser did take the time to develop some unique products for Massdrop, especially with the HD 58X Jubilee which had the most customization. If you have been on Drop/Massdrop long enough, you may even have some store credit and some of these headphones. If so, and you were looking for an upgrade or some other Sennheiser products, that’s what this event is for.

Alex_MayI agree. Massdrop has an amazing concept of presenting the money to the manufacturer before it is made to cut costs, and this is more of a normal retail website with rewards points no different from Best Buy. They should try to make a HD82x model that has the Drop logo and list it for $1499 and I would seriously consider it.

the minimum advertised price is $2,000. you get $300 in store credit. this is the best deal offered on this headphone. you do not have to buy it. some people will buy it and they will be glad to receive $300 in store credit.

robo24It won’t have the Drop “D” logo on it though, it’s not an exclusive product. Edit: By the way @robo24 thanks for giving me a laugh! @jaxtrauma I would also like to see another Baby Orpheus! The fact that Sennheiser made one before was a small miracle, I wonder how well it sold.

jaffeI meeeeeeean, this is what it costs. For some, it’s worth buying or saving for, based on what they’ve heard and how well it was differentiated and it’s advantages communicated, and for others, they either don’t want it or can’t justify the cost. I can justify the cost in my mind, but financially I can’t afford it (Call me a pleb, go on, SAY IT, WATCH MY FACE SHOW PROFOUND SADNESS! 😅). I’m trying to walk the middle ground, to manage expectations that realistically a lower cost model would have to be lower cost to produce. On Sennheiser’s side, I don’t know if the product page and marketing was enough to establish that the value was worth the price. I saw Axel Grell speak about the development of this headphone at a CanJam, and it was super educational about headphone design in general. Sure, it made me appreciate the HD 820 more, but it also made me wonder about how other engineers seal their headphones, and appreciate how bad simply putting a bubble over the back of an open headphone would sound. https://youtu.be/CB-SCA1reqE EDIT: The above link goes to an (interesting, but OT) video about proper temperatures for cooking pans. I thought I could find the video I was looking for, but it’s proving tricky! https://youtu.be/N5KVFg41x2s

EDIT EDIT: Win! Head-Fi made a nice recording, and Jude covered it in detail. Axel’s presentation above and Jude’s article and measurements below.
