Why are people buying this? ....if you put digital lossless audio on your phone it will be the same quality...and you can get a tiny DAC (if you really hate your phone DAC for some reason) that is more portable than this and works with other devices...

lightning-kingB/c lossless digital audio on your phone takes up crap tons of storage for those who can't expand their storage (iphones). Even for those that can expand their storage, a dedicated music player like this has a high quality dac and amp. Buying what you call a "tiny dac" is no doubt worse in terms of sound quality compared to this player.

lightning-kingI like the fact that I can use the Shanling M5 to store DSD files and play back on several devices. Besides, it is a really neat thing to hold in the hand. I also have a leather case for it. Feels wonderful. Good for you that you can enjoy music without it.

mxnm2006That's all well and good...but you haven't made any argument for the point of this device. I can store lossless music on my phone. If I want a quality DAC I can use an external one for cheaper.
My phone feels good in my hand and has a leather case.
