Hi, thanks for your comment! We agree, at the first sight it seems expensive compared to the size and price of the bunka. The matter with petty knives is that they practically take almost the same amount of work as larger knives, while the savings on the steel are not so significant. That's why the price of the petty is not proportionally less than a larger bunka.

I dunno.... 60% blade height, 75% blade length, at roughly 68% of the price Sounds to me like it's right on the nose, if you're comparing to their ZDP-189 Bunka and looking strictly at materials. (if we ignore the value of the saya on the Bunka) But I'd agree with @sharpedge, it's really more about blade material and the cost of labor when you're looking at hand forged knives. Not the same as comparing two knives of different sizes that are just stamped out and ground to shape in a factory. Now, that's not to say the price isn't up there for a petty knife in general, it's definitely on the pricier side. You can always get a good enough petty for $30-50, or you can spend $2-300 without even getting into exotic/custom stuff. But given the material and methods, I wouldn't say this one is too overpriced. Assuming it's made to the same quality of their other stuff, I think this is a decent deal if you're in the market for this level of a knife. (this wasn't highlighted in the zdp bunka description, but they did do things like waxing the handle, closing up the gaps around the tang, actually sharpening it to a usable edge instead of just putting a rudimentary bevel on it...these are all things that many Japanese knife makers leave for the buyer to do themselves, or charge a heavy premium to do for you. If they do the same on this one, that's a good chunk of the value right there) I'm most likely gonna cave and buy this to have the matching pair myself...just wish it had dropped during a different paycheck lol (edited for typos)

Hey Kavik, thanks for your insightful comment, always very thorough and to the point! The finish and make of this petty is of the same quality as the bunka. We're looking forward to your review if your paycheck will allow it :) . Im happy to offer the same price deal to you later on if that would work better for you. If so, you can send me an email and I'll arrange it for you (grega@sharpedgeshop.com). Best, Grega
