What is the point of a compass bezel? I don't get it.

Elem Same method Columbus used to discover America. Truth is, neither Columbus or navigating-by-watch are as popular as they used to be...

beanerds2Let me explain how it works. If you are in the northern hemisphere, have a GMT watch and it's set to the local timezone with no summer time saving, you point your GMT hand at the sun. North will be at 12. Now you can move your bezel so that you don't need to keep your arm at a weird angle while you walk. Yeah, I know, harder than carrying a $5 real compass with you, but way cooler! You can feel like Robinson Crusoe, while others will still think that you are a nerd... :) Note: If, like in the case of this watch, you don't have a GMT hand (the fourth yellow hand from the picture below, which moves at half the speed of the normal hour hand), you need to bisect the angle between the 12 mark and the hour clock. In the morning, just point the imaginary line in the middle of that angle to the sun and north will be at your 12 o'clock mark. In the afternoons, instead of projecting that line, you project the opposite side of that line. The outcome is the same, but it just requires a couple more things to take into account. By now, you are probably seriously considering buying a real compass, right? :)
