Could anyone comment on how these compare to the Ultimate Ears Reference Monitors? It's on Massdrop right now. I'm a little curious as to why these SE846 have many more buyers than the UE ref monitors.

yeky83These are universal so you don't have to get earmolds that cost around $100 and would ship faster.

yeky83The sound signature is also extremely different. The UERM are very linear earphones that are incredibly unforgiving toward badly recorded tracks. They're perfect for purists that want to hear songs exactly the way they were recorded. But because of this, flaws of poorly recorded tracks are enhanced, so some tracks might come across as harsh or sloppy. The SE846 is more of a consumer brand of headphone that's a little more forgiving. Its strengths are in its phenomenal bass performance that rivals the best of CIEMs. It also has that signature Shure house sound that many people find pleasant. Vocals are lush, and the highs are just bright enough without being harsh. With that said, go for the UERM if you're a discerning listener who wants to hear songs exactly the way they were recorded, and go for the SE846 if you want phenomenal bass and lush music. If you yearn for that custom molded fit, you can also get custom sleeves from Sensaphonics for the SE846, so you can have the best of both worlds.
