Wood Shades With Humble Roots

To say that Shwood comes from humble beginnings would be an understatement. Made with the goal of producing sunglasses out of wood, the company’s first pair was whittled by hand from the limb of a madrone tree. They were fitted with lenses purchased from a corner store, and finished with a set of rusty hinges from an old cabinet.

That was 2009. Today, Shwood has replaced the pocket knife with a laser cutter. The lenses, though they’re still ground to spec in-house, hail from German manufacturer Carl Zeiss. And the home office? It’s still in Portland, Oregon, but it’s no longer a literal home. Some things never change, though. Like that first pair of Shwood shades, each pair today is made in-house, in Portland, with the goal of showcasing the natural grain of the wood.

Note: At checkout, you’ll have your choice of three different styles, two with acetate-and-wood frames, and one with Zebrawood frame (+ $35).

Cannons: Wayfarers for Smaller Faces

The Cannon sunglasses—named, like the rest of the catalog, after a town in Oregon—come in three different colorways. One of these is made almost entirely from hardwood, with spring hinges and polarized Carl Zeiss lenses. The other two are made from Mazzucchelli acetate with hardwood inlays on the arms, polarized Carl Zeiss lenses, and five-barrel hinges. Designed for those with smaller faces—square, round, diamond, or heart-shaped—the Cannons feature a slightly narrow bridge and a lower profile.
