To say that Shwood comes from humble beginnings would be an understatement. The company’s first pair of sunglasses was whittled by hand from the limb of a madrone tree. They were fitted with lenses purchased from a corner store, and finished with a set of rusty hinges from an old cabinet. That was 2009. Today, Shwood has replaced the pocket knife with a laser cutter. The lenses, though they’re still ground to spec in-house, hail from German manufacturer Carl Zeiss. And the home office? It’s no longer a literal home. Some things never change, though. Like that first pair of Shwood shades, each pair today is made in Portland with the goal of showcasing the natural beauty of the materials.

Featuring a strong silhouette, the Monroe pairs thick Italian cellulose acetate on the front and earpieces with genuine wood inlays on the arms. Meanwhile, the premium CR39 lenses provide 100-percent UVA and UVB protection. Available in neutral shades of black, brown, and gray, plus an eye-catching blue, these sunglasses look great on round, oval, rectangle, and heart face shapes.
