Just Received mine on Friday and I've had the weekend to test it out.
In my experience this is the best performing smsl amp. I own the sa-36, sa-60, and sa-160 as well as the a2.
The sa-160 is really powerful and sounds great. However, the power brick is massive, it really is overkill for 90% of speakers on a desk, and there was a slight high frequency whine that never went away.
The sa-36 sounds great, maybe a little warmer than neutral, but may not have enough power for some inefficient speakers, and has no bells and whistles.
I use the sa-60 in a custom battery powered boombox and I have no complaints. Almost the same features as the a2 and sounds great.
The a2 is the standout of the bunch. It sounds great and is the most neutral to my ears. The a2 has enough power on a desk setup for pretty much any speakers. The tone controls work nicely, although I don't use them. The sub out has no built in crossover, but its nice that it's there. The amp is dead silent with no background noise. I even like the digital volume control. All the smsl amps are nicely built and look great, but I really like the updated styling of the a2.
I am simply amazed that an amplifier so small and inexpensive can perform so well. I've been into hifi for a long time and have owned lots of gear. Good amplifiers have always been big, heavy, and could function as space heaters. These class D amps are very impressive and for this price the smsl a2 is one of the best.
If you need a speaker amp for your desk, don't hesitate to buy this.
Cheers.
