FWIW, I have this unit on my desk now. It's plugged into my laptop via USB, and I'm using it to power a pair of Micca MB42x and HD650s. It works great. It seems to have no problem with the HDs. Is my Schiit better? Not sure. Maybe if I did extensive A-Bing I'd notice a difference. But there's nothing obvious. In the meantime I get what I wanted, which was something small for my desk that could switch back and forth between speakers and cans. Now I'm wondering if or how the TEAC AD-101 is better, as it costs roughly 2x.
I have both. Got the SMSL because the TEAC's volume knob died and I had to send it in for repair. Had to pay for shipping, and communication was nonexistent. It just showed back up one day like two months later. That aside, the TEAC is great when the volume knob works. Better remote than the SMSL, seems like it can push headphones a little better. SMSL has EQ, TEAC doesn't. TEAC has sub out, SMSL has to be routed through a sub.
this is the EXACT setup I would be using it for. Glad to hear it can power the HD650's well, i knew it would have no issue with the Miccas
